The declaration of martial law on December 3 in South Korea has caused a significant shift in the messaging app usage habits of the country's people.
According to the latest data from mobile analytics firm IGAWorks, the Telegram messaging app has recorded a surge in downloads in the following days.
Specifically, on December 3, the number of new installations of Telegram increased 4 times compared to normal days, up to 40,576, accounting for nearly half of the total number of downloads of messaging applications on the day.
The growth didn’t stop there. On December 4, Telegram recorded 33,000 new installs. This helped Telegram surpass popular domestic messaging apps like LINE and KakaoTalk to become the most downloaded app in this category in South Korea.
One of the main reasons why South Korean users are flocking to install Telegram is because of the app's strong end-to-end encryption system, which helps ensure privacy for conversations, especially amid concerns about censorship and service disruptions.
In addition, the fact that Telegram's servers are located overseas is also a factor that attracts users. While domestic messaging apps such as Naver and Kakao have experienced overload and connection interruptions after martial law was declared, Telegram has remained stable, meeting users' urgent communication needs.
Telegram now has 700 million registered users worldwide .
