Carlos Alcaraz brilliantly defeated Jannik Sinner in a dramatic US Open final on the morning of September 8th (Vietnam time) in New York, thereby winning his second Grand Slam title on hard courts and simultaneously dethroning his opponent as world number 1.
With a comprehensive and top-class performance, the Spanish player defeated Sinner with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. This victory not only prevented Sinner from winning two consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows but also ended the Italian player's 65-week dominance at the top of the ATP rankings, bringing Alcaraz back to the number one position.

The US Open final was the third consecutive Grand Slam encounter between Sinner and Alcaraz. Except for the second set, when Sinner regained his composure and leveled the score, Alcaraz dominated the match. The 22-year-old outclassed Sinner with 42 winners compared to 21, losing only 9 points on his first serve in a performance lasting 2 hours and 42 minutes.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Alcaraz emotionally shared: “Honestly, my team, my family, I am truly fortunate to have you all. Your efforts have helped me to improve, not only professionally but also as a person. Every achievement I have made is thanks to you, and this achievement is also thanks to you.”
In his speech, Sinner quickly congratulated Alcaraz, who leads the Tour with 7 titles and 61 wins in 2025. The two players have won the last 8 majors together.
“You guys are doing great. I know there’s a lot of effort behind today’s performance, you’ve done better than me. Enjoy it. This is a great moment,” Sinner told Alcaraz and his team.
Alcaraz also secured his first world number one ranking with a victory at the 2022 US Open, and will now return to the top of tennis for the first time since September 2023. He is the second youngest player to win six major men's singles titles in the Open Era after Bjorn Borg.

Sinner was on a 27-match winning streak at major hard-court tournaments before the final, aiming to become only the seventh player in the Open Era to win three Grand Slam singles titles in a single season. By reaching the New York final, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion became the youngest player in the Open Era to reach the finals of all four major tournaments in a single season. Sinner also reached the Roland Garros final, where he won three title points before losing to Alcaraz in a classic match.
However, while Alcaraz rediscovered his form early on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Italian struggled to maintain his signature combination of power and precision from the baseline. Alcaraz consistently dominated long rallies and successfully converted 5 of his 11 break points, extending his lead to 10-5 in the match against Sinner.
After the final was delayed by approximately 50 minutes due to security measures in place to welcome US President Donald Trump, Alcaraz quickly took control of his latest match against Sinner. He gained possession of the ball from the start after returning from the opening set, and his play seemed to put pressure on Sinner, who had made an unusually high nine unforced errors in the opening set alone.
Cornered, Sinner regained control in the final with a series of precise shots in the second set to equalize against Alcaraz. The 24-year-old didn't make any obvious tactical changes to orchestrate that comeback, however, thanks to a break he secured, Sinner went on to win and level the score.

However, losing the first set at the 2025 US Open only seemed to excite Alcaraz further. Sinner was powerless to stop his opponent in the third set, as the Spaniard took a 5-0 lead and finished the set with an overwhelming 11-1 winner count.
Sinner continued to struggle to hold his serve in the fourth set, and the Italian player painstakingly saved two break points in the opening game. However, the pressure finally paid off in the fifth game, when Alcaraz successfully broke Sinner's serve, taking the score to 3-2. This was the turning point that led Alcaraz to victory in the final after four sets.
Not only has Alcaraz secured the number one ranking, but he also holds a better position in the race for the year-end number one title. He currently leads Sinner by 2,590 points in the ATP Live Race to Turin. Both players have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, the season-ending tournament.
