Nunez's dreams in Saudi Arabia were shattered. |
According to Saudi Arabian media, the arrival of new signing Karim Benzema has forced Al Hilal's management to remove Nunez from the squad for the Saudi Pro League (SPL) and the National Cup. However, the former Liverpool striker will still be able to participate in the AFC Champions League.
Previously, Nunez was also not a favored player at Al Hilal. Coach Simone Inzaghi preferred to use Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo rather than giving Nunez regular opportunities.
The recent tough moves suggest Al Hilal is making strategic calculations regarding its squad in order to compete for titles. With an excess of attacking players, Nunez is being considered as a potential candidate.

Nunez did not live up to expectations. |
This season, Nunez has only scored 7 goals in 23 appearances for Al Hilal across all competitions. His inconsistent form means the Uruguayan international is not guaranteed a starting place.
During the winter transfer window, Fenerbahce expressed interest in signing Nunez, but the striker declined. He still wants to remain with Al Hilal until the end of his contract (which runs until 2028).
However, the current situation has changed, forcing Nunez to reconsider his future as the 2026 World Cup approaches.
Despite Nunez's inconsistent form, Al Hilal has maintained stability in the SPL championship race. The Riyadh-based team currently leads the standings with 50 points, just one point ahead of their direct competitor Al Nassr. The two-horse race between these Saudi Arabian giants promises to be intense as the season enters its decisive phase.
In their next match, Al Hilal will face Al Ettifaq in the early hours of February 13th as part of Round 22 of the SPL.
