Comprehensive in terms of types, but still limited.

Current state of logistics in Da Nang : Comprehensive in terms of types of services, but still has many limitations.

International transportation in Da Nang encompasses all three modes: sea, air, and land. However, each mode has limitations that prevent its full potential from being exploited.

Mr. Duong Tien Lam, Head of the Da Nang Representative Office of the Vietnam Logistics Business Association, provided this information at the conference.

At the recent Da Nang 2024 Trade Connection and Export Promotion Conference, according to an analysis by Mr. Duong Tien Lam, Head of the Da Nang Representative Office of the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (General Director of AsiaTrans Vietnam), the current state of international transportation in Da Nang has all three types of services, but each type has certain limitations.

Regarding maritime transport, according to Mr. Lam, Da Nang only has one international seaport capable of receiving container ships; for bulk cargo and some other types of liquid cargo, there are many other ports. However, currently, only Tien Sa Port is capable of receiving container ships.

Currently, some of the world's leading shipping companies offer services connecting Da Nang with major international seaports, but Da Nang Port has limited capacity.

Furthermore, according to statistics from the Vietnam Logistics Business Association, in Da Nang, starting in April 2024, freight rates began to rise again, similar to the period during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, importers and exporters need to carefully consider their inventory levels and the quantity of raw material orders to ensure they do not suffer losses.

Regarding air transport, the Head Representative of the Vietnam Logistics Business Association in Da Nang assessed that although Da Nang International Airport has seen fairly good growth in international passengers and tourists , the volume of cargo handled through the airport is very limited.

Although the Da Nang Customs Department does not yet have figures on the volume of import and export goods in the first six months of 2024, in recent years the volume of goods passing through the airport has grown very slowly and is very small compared to the two airports at the ends of the country, Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports.

"One of the limitations in cargo handling at Da Nang airport currently is that the cargo terminal's warehouse space is very small and lacks cold storage. That is one of the current shortcomings," Mr. Lam said.

However, Mr. Lam hopes that, in the near future, Da Nang City is developing a plan that includes expanding the international cargo terminal at Da Nang Airport, thereby meeting the needs of logistics development in the city.

In terms of road transport, one type of international road transport often mentioned with Da Nang as both the destination and the endpoint is the East-West Economic Corridor running from Da Nang to Myanmar.

Mr. Lam mentioned that although the route to Myanmar is currently disrupted, other connecting routes passing through Da Nang, such as those to China, Savannakhet in Laos, and provinces in the Northeast region of Thailand, are operating normally.

The General Director of AsiaTrans Vietnam believes that road transport is a promising solution for import and export businesses to consider when transporting goods to countries sharing a border, or for urgent orders, as the advantage of "cross-border road transport" is that it is faster than sea transport but cheaper than air transport.

Regarding road transport, Mr. Lam pointed out the context of connecting Da Nang with neighboring countries, especially Laos, which has many border crossings. The main border crossings closest to Da Nang are Lao Bao and La Hay (Quang Tri), but they are underutilized.

Among these, the border crossing very close to Da Nang but currently "not being exploited well" is the Nam Giang border crossing to Dak Ta Ook in Laos. Very few container shipments pass through this border crossing to Da Nang port; the majority consists of cassava starch, agricultural products, and other frozen goods, while the majority of goods passing through the border crossing are bulk cargo.

Furthermore, regarding the road connecting to the Nam Giang border gate in Quang Nam, Mr. Lam assessed the road conditions as "very poor" and not yet upgraded, leading to limited connectivity between Da Nang port and the southern region of Laos.
