From "beauty" to " economic "
The current flower capital of Dong Thap province is a combination of two flower villages: My Phong and Sa Dec. According to statistics from the Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Environment, the entire province has approximately over 2,100 hectares of ornamental flowers. Sa Dec ward alone has over 1,000 hectares, with an average production value of over 600 million VND/hectare, many times higher than rice cultivation. My Phong flower village also has its own strengths, with over 130 households producing flowers on nearly 1,000 hectares, but it only produces flowers for the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, not year-round like Sa Dec flower village. After the flower season, farmers switch to other production methods to develop a more flexible economy.
Mr. Dang Van Giau, head of the Tan An flower and ornamental plant cooperative in Sa Dec ward, Dong Thap province, shared that previously, most people in Sa Dec flower village grew flowers seasonally. However, it later developed into a flower village geared towards economic development. But it hasn't truly flourished as it has today, due to the fear that advertising or media coverage would hinder sales.
However, nowadays, ornamental flower growers in Sa Dec are focusing on economic development, their mindset has changed, and they are willing to learn about the market and connect with businesses to develop the province's ornamental flower industry. Many households not only engage in agriculture but also combine it with tourism and trade, creating stable jobs for thousands of local workers.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Huu Tai, a farmer whose family has been involved in ornamental flower cultivation in Sa Dec for two generations, also aims for the development of the Sa Dec ornamental flower industry. According to Mr. Tran Huu Tai, based on the mindset and methods of the flower growers, it is clear that for Sa Dec ornamental flowers to develop and reach further, it must not only stop at production, but also require a connection between growers, traders, and consuming businesses, with each stage in the chain developing together and sharing benefits.
Sa Dec ornamental plants not only serve the domestic market but must also meet export quality standards. Besides the efforts of the people, the ornamental plant industry also needs the attention and support of the local government to develop policies and strategies for its growth.

We need mechanisms to support aspirations for greater reach.
According to experts in the ornamental flower industry, combining the two famous flower-growing regions of Sa Dec and My Phong in Dong Thap province is a strategic move, opening up new avenues for the development of the ornamental flower production and ecotourism sectors in Dong Thap province. While Sa Dec is known as the ornamental flower capital of the Mekong Delta, My Phong flower village possesses the characteristics of a traditional flower-growing region, with rich potential for ecotourism combined with the development of agricultural culture.
When the two flower-growing areas of Sa Dec and My Phong are linked, with proper technical planning and branding, as well as the development of tourism infrastructure, Dong Thap province will form a closed value chain, creating a boost for the province's agricultural economy while attracting domestic and international tourists to visit these flower-growing areas.
Mr. Dang Van Giau, head of the Tan An Ornamental Flower Cooperative in Sa Dec ward, Dong Thap province, observes that when the production mindset shifts to an economic mindset, the local ornamental flower industry has many opportunities to thrive. Currently, the people of Sa Dec flower village have shown a clear change in their thinking, moving from a closed-off approach to actively opening their gardens, linking production with communication and tourism. This is the result of the restructuring of the ornamental flower industry, where people not only grow flowers for sale but also increase the value of the craft and the flower village.

With this shift in mindset, the people here have also linked up through cooperatives and associations to discuss business strategies, learn from each other about cultivation and care techniques, share resources, and jointly solve difficulties and obstacles. This has improved the quality of ornamental flowers, creating higher-value products that meet market demands. Many villagers are also learning flower cultivation techniques with a view to exporting.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hung, owner of Happy Land Hung Thy tourist destination in Sa Dec Ward, Dong Thap Province, assessed that exporting ornamental flowers is not only a matter of concern for businesses in Dong Thap Province, but also a future direction for the ornamental flower industry in Dong Thap. Therefore, the ornamental flower industry in Dong Thap Province needs many mechanisms, policies, and favorable conditions for the transformation and application of science and technology in ornamental flower production from the local government for export businesses. At the same time, ornamental flower businesses in Dong Thap also urgently need guidance to complete the legal procedures for exporting ornamental flowers.
In the coming period, Dong Thap province aims to build the brand of its ornamental flower industry into a distinctive cultural symbol, on par with famous flower centers in the Mekong Delta, Southeast, and South Central regions. Representatives from the Dong Thap Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated that the province will continue to invest in tourism infrastructure, upgrade flower village tour routes, encourage smart farming models, reduce emissions, apply high technology to production, and promote digital transformation in product promotion and consumption.
In addition, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Thap province will coordinate with relevant departments and agencies to strengthen connections between businesses, cooperatives and farmers, creating a favorable environment for the formation of a sustainable ornamental flower - tourism - OCOP value chain.
