Dong Thap province plans to divide the country into 5 socio-economic zones.

On May 21st, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province held a conference to announce the adjustment of the provincial planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

According to Pham Thanh Ngai, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, the conference is an important legal milestone and also the beginning of a longer, more arduous journey - a journey to turn strategic ideas into projects, livelihoods, and improve the quality of life for millions of people in Dong Thap.

Accordingly, the scope and boundaries of the planning adjustment include the entire administrative boundary of Dong Thap province, with a natural area of ​​5,938.64 km² ; bordered to the north by Tay Ninh province, to the northeast by Ho Chi Minh City, to the east by the East Sea, to the south by Vinh Long province and Can Tho city, to the west by An Giang province; and to the northwest by the Kingdom of Cambodia.

By 2030, Dong Thap aims to become a province with rapid industrial development in a modern and sustainable direction; a pioneer in building an ecological agriculture , modern rural areas, and civilized farmers, ranking among the leading developed localities in the Mekong Delta region.

At the same time, the province focuses on building a comprehensively developed culture and people of Dong Thap; improving people's lives, progressing in culture and society, and ensuring national defense and security.

Some specific targets set include: an average GRDP growth rate of 9.5% per year for the period 2026-2030, striving to reach 10% per year; GRDP per capita reaching approximately VND 155 million by 2030; total social development investment capital for the period 2026-2030 reaching approximately VND 750-800 trillion, accounting for an average of 35.8-38.2% of GRDP; export turnover reaching USD 14.8 billion by 2030; completion of construction of approximately 12,200 social housing units, creating jobs for 250,000 workers…

The plan identifies five socio-economic zones: the central socio-economic zone along the Tien River; the socio-economic zone south of the Tien River and north of the Hau River; the Dong Thap Muoi ecological agricultural economic zone; the marine economic zone; and the border socio-economic zone.

Simultaneously, the province has formed five key economic corridors, including: the central economic corridor (along the expressway and National Highway 1); the eastern coastal economic corridor (along the coastal road and National Highway 50); the economic corridor along the Tien River (from the border to the estuary); the inland economic corridor connecting Dong Thap Muoi (along National Highways N1, N2, and 30); and the economic corridor along the Hau River.

During the period 2026-2030, Dong Thap will continue to develop, expand, and improve its urban system, striving to form 48 urban areas, including: 6 central urban areas, 19 new urban areas, and 23 urbanized areas in communes. By 2030, the province's urbanization rate is expected to reach approximately 50%.

Regarding the provincial administrative center, when the necessary conditions and resources are met, research should be conducted on relocating it to the Cai Be area in the period after 2030.

To achieve its goals, Dong Thap province has put forward six key solutions for implementing the plan, including: solutions for mobilizing capital and developing human resources; solutions for the environment, science and technology; solutions for mechanisms and policies for linked development; solutions for managing and controlling development; and solutions for organizing the implementation and monitoring of the plan.
