To prevent summer from becoming a "third semester"

(Baohatinh.vn) - Along with the need to create a safe and enriching summer for children, many parents in Ha Tinh are concerned about choosing skills-based classes for their children so that the summer vacation does not become a "third semester".

Just days after the 2025-2026 school year ended, social media groups were flooded with posts seeking summer classes for their children. From extra classes in academics and foreign languages to skills and talent classes, many parents rushed to register early with the mindset of "reserving a spot." For many families in urban areas, enrolling their children in summer classes is not only about maintaining their education but also a way to manage their children while parents are at work.

Many advertisements for summer courses for children are appearing on social media.

Ms. Vo Thi Dieu from Tran Phu ward shared: “Due to the busy nature of my work, I don't have time to look after my children, so I prioritize choosing a suitable summer learning environment so that my children have a safe place to stay. Currently, in addition to talent classes such as MC training and music lessons, I am researching some additional academic subjects for my children to avoid them forgetting what they have learned during a long summer break.”

In reality, the mentality of "not letting children fall behind" still significantly influences how many families organize their children's summer. Many parents worry that if children rest completely for nearly three months during the summer, they will lose their study habits, routines, or opportunities for interaction. To reduce pressure on children, instead of focusing too much on academic classes, most parents prioritize enrolling their children in extracurricular and physical activities such as swimming, martial arts, music , or painting during the early part of summer.

Skills-building classes are a popular choice for many parents to enroll their children in during the summer.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Duyen (Cam Due commune) said: “My children have just gone through a rather stressful school year, so during the summer break, I will initially encourage them to participate in experiential activities, play football, fly kites, and also register them for martial arts and foreign language classes.”

This perspective is also becoming increasingly popular among many young parents. For them, summer is not just a break after a school year, but also an opportunity for children to gain more experiences, develop life skills, and form positive habits.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (Thanh Sen ward) said: “Both of my young children love drawing and making handicrafts. This year, after school ended, I enrolled them in drawing classes. I think this is also a way to train their patience and meticulousness, and an opportunity for them to discover themselves and develop their passions.”

Although the trend of enrolling children in skills and talent classes is becoming increasingly popular, many parents still want their children to take extra classes during the summer. As a result, many children have to attend a series of classes ranging from academics and talents to life skills, significantly reducing their time for rest and recreation. For many children, summer becomes as busy as a school year, while not every child is suited to such a packed schedule.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, a lecturer in Psychology and Education at Ha Tinh University, shared: "Summer rest is necessary, but effective rest doesn't mean stopping completely. It's about creating space for the body and mind to regain balance. Many parents have a common mindset of wanting their children to excel without clearly defining which field suits them best, leading them to enroll their children in too many classes as a 'test,' inadvertently creating pressure. Parents need to listen to their children's needs and abilities instead of chasing after the fear of their children falling behind their peers, because if the schedule is too packed, summer will no longer be a time for rest and energy recovery."

A meaningful summer isn't about the number of classes or skill certificates children earn, but about the opportunity they have to develop harmoniously physically and mentally, and gain truly meaningful childhood experiences. The most important thing is parental involvement in choosing activities suitable for each child. When adults moderate their expectations and listen to their children more, summer will provide them with many essential experiences for their growth and development.
