To help young people overcome their reluctance to read books.

Many young people today can spend hours browsing social media, watching short videos, and playing games, yet they hesitate to pick up a book. Numerous solutions have been proposed to rekindle a passion for reading among young people, but the results have not been as effective as hoped.

Some experts believe that the fact many young people are "addicted" to social media but lazy about reading books isn't necessarily because they don't like reading, but perhaps because the way books approach them isn't engaging enough.

Therefore, the fourth Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2025 will take place from April 15th to May 2nd nationwide with many new features such as workshops, discussions, and knowledge exchanges on reading trends; sharing information on how to use technology and new e-reading platforms to encourage reading; and establishing online reading clubs and groups to discuss works through platforms like Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet.

These can be considered powerful messages and appropriate initiatives in the 4.0 era. It's understandable that many young people can't find time to read books but still browse social media, watch short videos , or play games… because the information they access on social media is so abundant with short, easy-to-understand content, full of vivid images and videos. They can watch a video or read an article in just a few minutes, while reading requires much more concentration and time, a quieter, more focused approach.

Furthermore, social media allows viewers to interact instantly, giving them a sense of constant connection and enabling them to express their opinions and viewpoints through likes and comments. It can be said that social media offers numerous ways to cater to users' psychology, while books can only reach them through a few traditional methods.

So how can we ignite a passion for reading? Some experts suggest that, first and foremost, we need to provide young people with books that are truly relatable and suitable to their psychology and needs, such as books on self-development, psychology, life skills, or inspirational stories. Books that address issues that young people care about—love, careers, or everyday life—written in a youthful language with concise sentences will also be more appealing to them.

In addition, the application of technology such as audiobooks and e-books will make reading more accessible. Book reviews on social media are also an effective method. Furthermore, book clubs or beautiful, relaxing reading spaces will certainly inspire young people to read more.

More importantly, let's make reading an enjoyable experience, so that young people approach books as a discovery , a natural need, rather than a rigid obligation to seek knowledge.

As some cultural media experts have said, reading culture cannot thrive if books are considered "too sophisticated." Therefore, we need more youthful, trendy books, perhaps even picture books, with concise yet profound content. Furthermore, we need to integrate books into digital life. Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram can absolutely become places to spread reading culture if they know how to communicate intelligently and creatively. Then, books themselves will naturally attract young people because they are accessible in a way that aligns with their lifestyles: through apps, podcasts, social media, etc.
