Benchmark scores for subjects including Math and English have decreased sharply.
Speaking with VietNamNet, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung - Director of Information and Communications, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that the 2025 high school graduation exam takes place in the context of the new generaleducation program being comprehensively implemented, leading to significant changes in the exam structure of many subjects.
The graduation exam questions generally follow the direction of the Ministry of Education and Training and are part of the curriculum, but are assessed to be slightly more difficult than in 2024, clearly demonstrating the requirement to apply knowledge, synthesis skills and practical thinking.
In particular, the Literature subject is suggestive and limits “memorization”. In particular, the social argument with the statement “Every homeland is the Fatherland’s sky” creates conditions for candidates to express their emotional depth and current affairs perspective.
Math has changed significantly according to the new program, with increased difficulty and high requirements for applied thinking - the average score is expected to be around 6-7, with very few candidates achieving 9-10.
Similarly, the exam questions for Foreign Languages and other subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Information Technology, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, and Technology also show a trend towards increasing comprehensive and highly classified assessment of abilities, while minimizing the element of chance.
The emergence of new subjects such as Information Technology and Technology helps to expand the choices for candidates, however, the exams for these subjects are also of considerable length and complexity.
Ms. Dung said that with the general level of this year's exam, the exam score range is predicted to be mainly concentrated in the range of 6-7. Traditional combinations such as A00, B00, D01 tend to differentiate clearly, with common scores of 18-22, while the number of candidates achieving 25 points or more is not much. This score range basically meets the graduation assessment goal, and at the same time, it is predicted that university benchmark scores will remain the same or decrease slightly in some majors.
Mr. Cu Xuan Tien - Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department, University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that, with the reality of the exam questions and the test-taking situation of candidates this year, it can be predicted that the benchmark score of the high school graduation exam results method will generally decrease compared to last year.
The admission combinations with Literature, Math, and English will decrease more than the combination with History, Geography, Economic Education, and Law. In particular, the D01 combination (Math - Literature - English) will have a sharp decrease in the standard score compared to 2024. This will also lead to disadvantages for candidates if schools consider admission to a major with many combinations but do not have a mechanism to adjust the scores between the combinations.

According to Mr. Pham Thai Son - Director of Admissions, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, the benchmark score will decrease for groups with Math and English. The reduction is from 0.5 to 1.5 points for groups A01, D01 because the English score may be much lower than last year. The remaining groups may not decrease or decrease very little. The exam questions for Physics, Chemistry, Biology are similar to last year, so the scores for groups B00, A00 will be the same as last year. Particularly, groups with Informatics, Economic Education and Law will have a floor score of 16 to 17 because the exam questions are easy and candidates do well on the exam.
“The general assessment of the English exam is that it is difficult to get a high score, the average score is mainly 5 points, which is about 1 point lower than last year. The rest of the high school graduation exam is average and easy,” said Mr. Son.
How do school benchmarks decrease?
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung predicted that the benchmark score based on the 2025 high school exam scores will range from 16 to 21, depending on the major. Majors that attract many candidates such as Information Technology, Multimedia Communications, Graphic Design, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Marketing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Automotive Engineering Technology, English Language, etc. will still maintain high competitiveness, with the expected benchmark score ranging from 18 to 20.
Regarding the University of Economics and Law, Mr. Cu Xuan Tien said that this year, 6 groups will be recruited, an increase of 2 groups compared to 2024. Of which, Math and English are the 2 main subjects for recruitment, so the upcoming standard score is expected to decrease slightly compared to 2024.
Mr. Tien informed that, with the current reality, the school's admissions board is considering adjusting the difference in admission scores for groups with English subjects to ensure the rights of candidates. The official information will be announced by the school after the high school graduation exam scores are available.
In addition, this year the school allows candidates with international English certificates to choose between converting them into English subject scores in the admission combination or adding bonus points to the total score of the admission combination. With the difficulty of the English subject this year, Mr. Tien predicts that many candidates will use international English certificates to apply to the school.
“Candidates should not worry, the important thing now is to carefully refer to the admission information of the schools and arrange their wishes scientifically to optimize their chances of being admitted to the majors and schools they love. Difficult questions are difficult in general, the benchmark scores between methods/combinations will be adjusted accordingly by the schools. In addition, according to the new admission regulations, all methods must be considered for admission at the same time (early admission is eliminated), and there is an equivalent conversion of admission scores, so the chance of being admitted by considering high school graduation exam scores will be higher than in 2024,” said Mr. Tien.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, Mr. Son predicted that the admission scores would be similar or about 1 point lower than last year for the majors of Economics and Law such as Marketing, Logistics and Supply Chain, and Business Administration. The expected admission scores for these majors would be around 22-23 points. The majors of Tourism and Information Technology would be about 0.5 points lower than last year, or around 20.5-21.5 points. The admission scores for other majors such as Electricity, Mechanics, Garment Technology, and Biotechnology would be similar to last year, around 17-20 points.
According to Mr. Son, this year the school has added block C00 in the admissions for the majors of Tourism and Law, with an expected score of around 23-24 to be admitted.
