- Unforeseeable consequences from adult subjectivity
According to Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital , recently there have been continuous cases of young children being bitten by snakes in critical condition due to improper handling or delay in emergency care.
Doctors advise people not to treat the condition at home on their own, nor to take their children to get the venom removed because this can make the condition worse, even life-threatening.
One of the cases that made many people feel sorry was a girl over 3 years old, the daughter of Ms. Nguyen Thi My Chau (Tan Long B hamlet, Dam Doi commune). Because the couple worked far away, the little girl stayed at home with her grandparents. While playing in the area behind the house, she was unfortunately bitten by a snake. The grandparents, in a panic, took her to "remove the venom" using traditional methods. About two hours later, seeing that the girl was showing unusual signs, the family took her to Dam Doi Hospital and transferred her to Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital. However, because the emergency room was taken too late, more than a month later, the girl is still in a deep coma.
Ms. Nguyen Thi My Chau's daughter is still in a coma after more than a month of snake bite treatment .
Another case occurred in Ma Tam hamlet, Nguyen Viet Khai commune. An 11-year-old girl, daughter of Nguyen Thi Duyen, was playing in her bedroom when a snake crawled in and bit her. At first, when asked, the girl said she was not bitten by a snake. Her family thought she had tripped and fallen while playing, causing the bleeding. In the afternoon, when she started vomiting continuously, they took her to the emergency room. The girl was transferred from Cai Nuoc Hospital to Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital. After 2 days of treatment, the girl was out of danger and no longer needed a ventilator.
Ms. Duyen's child is no longer on a ventilator after 2 days of intensive treatment.
According to Dr. Truong Thi Cam Tu, Department of Intensive Care - Anti-Poison, Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, in the summer, the number of snake bites in children increases, especially from cobras and vipers. Many children are in life-threatening situations because adults lack knowledge, handle the situation at home or are slow to take them to a medical facility.
Doctor Cam Tu warned: “Some families still believe in folk remedies such as sucking out the poisonous blood with their mouths, burning the bite, cutting the wound, applying leaves or tying tight ropes around the limbs. These methods have no medical basis and can make the condition worse.”

In addition, for families living near rivers and canals or in rural areas, it is necessary to clear away bushes around the house, close doors (especially bedrooms), and not let children play alone in deserted areas. Parents need to equip themselves with first aid knowledge to know how to handle an unexpected situation.
Snake bites are accidents that can happen at any time if you are not careful, but they can be completely prevented and cured if handled properly and promptly. Don’t let your trust in word-of-mouth tips cost you your health, even your child’s life./.
