On the morning of April 17 (Vietnam time), just two days after announcing GPT-4.1, OpenAI officially launched not one but two new models, named o3 and o4-mini. Both models demonstrate superior reasoning capabilities with many powerful improvements.

OpenAI says the o3 is its most advanced reasoning model yet, performing strongly on programming, math, and science- related tasks. The o4-mini is seen as a more cost-effective option that still delivers “impressive results” in similar areas.

More notably, both models can use and combine all of the tools available in ChatGPT, including web browsing and image generation, a new capability not seen in previous OpenAI systems, allowing them to solve complex, multi-step problems more efficiently.

At the same time, o3 and o4-mini can not only perceive images, but also interpret what they “see.” The models can understand images of whiteboards, diagrams, or sketches, even if they are of poor quality. They are also able to manipulate images as part of their reasoning process.

OpenAI is also releasing a new developer agent (similar to Claude Code) called Codex CLI. This tool is designed to provide developers with a minimalist interface that allows them to connect OpenAI models to source code on their local machine. Codex CLI is already compatible with o3 and o4-mini, and will soon support GPT-4.1.

In February, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that o3 would not be released as a standalone product but would be integrated into GPT-5. However, in early April he announced a change of plans.

“There are a number of reasons for this,” Altman wrote on X. The integration has been more difficult than he expected. However, he said the final version of “GPT-5 is much better than originally anticipated,” and is expected to be released in the next few months.

o3 and o4-mini are available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users today. In the coming weeks, OpenAI will officially launch o3-pro, an even more powerful version of its flagship reasoning model, and make it available to Pro users. In the meantime, users can continue to use o1-pro as before.
