(To Quoc) - On the afternoon of November 12th in Hanoi , Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong received the Algerian Ambassador to Vietnam, Sofiane Chaib, for a courtesy visit.

At the beginning of the meeting, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong expressed his congratulations to Ambassador Sofiane Chaib on his appointment as the Algerian Ambassador to Vietnam, and expressed his confidence that during his term, the Ambassador would make effective contributions to the development of cultural, sports, and tourism cooperation between Vietnam and Algeria.

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong stated that Vietnam and Algeria have a strong and friendly cooperative relationship spanning over 60 years. According to the Deputy Minister, in the field of culture, sports, and tourism cooperation, the two countries have signed an Agreement on Cooperation in Culture and Information and a Cultural Cooperation Program for the period 2016-2018.

In particular, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Algeria, the Vietnam National Drama Theatre (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) and the Algerian Embassy in Vietnam jointly staged and performed the play "The Man in Rubber Sandals" by Algerian author Kateb Yaccine in 2023.

In the field of tourism , in June 2015, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the tourism sector. By 2017, they had established a committee to monitor tourism cooperation in each country.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding on sports cooperation between the two countries also took place in April 2010. In the African region, Vietnam maintains good relations, regularly sending teams to compete in international tournaments in several countries with traditional ties, such as Algeria.

Overview of the reception

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong also stated that Vietnam is actively developing Vietnamese martial arts in Algeria in particular and Africa in general. Vovinam, in particular, has been included in the African Games program following these efforts. Vietnam has also sent several martial arts masters to Algeria to help train Algerian students in Vovinam.

The Deputy Minister expressed his hope that in the future, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Embassy would continue to promote the good cooperative relationship of the past, and also hoped that the Ambassador would continue to spread the traditional solidarity and friendship between the two sides through cooperative activities in culture, sports and tourism.

The Deputy Minister suggested that both sides should study and sign a cooperation agreement for the next phase; and encourage the implementation of cultural and artistic exchanges, film festivals, etc., in each country.

Cooperative activities should be further strengthened on occasions commemorating milestones in diplomatic relations between the two countries. Alongside this, cooperation and exchanges within international organizations and multilateral forums such as UNESCO and the International Organization of Francophonie should be promoted.

In the field of tourism, the Deputy Minister suggested that both sides strengthen and proactively provide information to introduce and promote their respective countries, cultures, and people; and organize online seminars to exchange experiences in tourism development between the two nations.

Regarding sports, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong affirmed that both sides need to maintain and develop the movement of studying and practicing Vietnamese traditional martial arts in Algeria. Cooperation should be implemented at the federation and association levels to maintain and develop Vietnamese traditional martial arts in Algeria in particular and African countries in general.

Thanking the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong personally for the warm and cordial welcome extended to the delegation, Ambassador Sofiane Chaib stated that Vietnam and Algeria share a long-standing traditional friendship and similar histories. Algeria is the only African country with two avenues named after Ho Chi Minh. Building on this close relationship and the special affection they have for each other, the Ambassador affirmed that during his term, he will actively contribute to promoting cooperation in culture, sports, and tourism between the two countries.

According to the Ambassador, at the 12th Session of the Vietnam-Algeria Intergovernmental Committee held in Hanoi in 2023, the two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of culture, sports and tourism.

During his term, the Ambassador hopes that Vietnam and Algeria will promote people-to-people exchanges through cooperation in culture, arts, sports, and tourism. Cooperation in film and cultural heritage is considered one of the key areas of focus.

The ambassador stated that Algeria will cooperate effectively with Vietnam to successfully organize activities that will help promote cultural, sports, and tourism cooperation between the two countries.

Ambassador Sofiane Chaib also stated that geographical distance is not a problem in developing cultural, sports, and tourism cooperation between the two countries. The Ambassador hopes that through the implementation of cultural, sports, and tourism cooperation activities, the people of both countries will have more opportunities to learn about each other's history, country, and people.
