The Real Madrid stars were bound by a secret contract requiring them to play in all competitions. |
Real Madrid, one of the giants of European football, quickly adapted by including a special clause in their players' contracts – a legal "shield" to deal with unforeseen circumstances.
Before the pandemic, football was considered an "invincible" sport, always proceeding according to schedule and standards. However, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted all plans. Leagues were postponed, matches had to be played without spectators, and some seasons even had to be extended beyond the players' contract terms.
Since the summer of 2020, Real Madrid has proactively included a crucial clause in the contracts of all its players: "The current contract covers all official competitions, even if those competitions take place outside of the season." This clause allows the club to legally extend contracts when the season is prolonged, avoiding legal complications and retaining key players during sensitive periods.
This clause becomes crucial as the 2024/25 season approaches the FIFA Club World Cup – a tournament that will take place outside the official season timeframe. Three players, Lucas Vázquez, Luka Modric, and Jesús Vallejo, despite having contracts expiring on June 30th, will continue to play for Real Madrid until the end of the tournament without needing a one-month contract extension, contrary to previous reports.
Since the summer of 2020, Real Madrid has proactively included an important clause in the contracts of all players: "The current contract covers all official competitions, even if those competitions take place outside of the season." |
For Real Madrid, this clause helps them avoid the risk of losing players unexpectedly at crucial times, while also increasing stability in the squad. For the players, this clause also provides clarity on their rights and obligations in the context of potentially unpredictable fixture schedules.
However, this clause also makes it difficult for other teams wanting to recruit players during the summer transfer window, as they cannot use those players until after the FIFA Club World Cup ends on July 14th.
Since not all teams have similar clauses in their contracts, FIFA decided to open an additional special transfer window from June 1st to 10th this year. This window allows clubs to sign new contracts, renew existing ones, or loan out players to ensure no team is short of players for the North American tournament.
The Covid-19 pandemic taught clubs an important lesson about flexibility and legality in player management. Real Madrid, with its "confidentiality" clause in player contracts, demonstrated thorough preparation and proactively dealt with changes in the match schedule.
This is not only a prime example of modern football but also a strategic move that helps "Los Blancos" maintain squad strength ahead of important tournaments.
