"I spent two days over the weekend contacting many stores in Hanoi before I could buy a dehumidifier. Initially, I wanted a 12-liter model, but they were out of stock. Models with capacities over 20 liters were scarce, so I had to buy the 28-liter version, even though it was more expensive than I actually needed," said Ms. Thuy Anh (Co Nhue, Hanoi).
On online forums dedicated to home appliances, dehumidifiers were also a hot topic, with numerous questions seeking advice on models, usage, and where to buy them in stock over the past weekend.
"A week ago, our warehouse had nearly 200 units, enough to last until the end of February, but yesterday there were none left," said Minh Hai, the owner of a household appliance store on To Huu Street (Hanoi). He expressed regret that he will have no stock to sell for the next two weeks because distributors and importers have also emptied their warehouses.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tan, Director of the Giga retail system, said that dehumidifiers are one of the best-selling household electronic items at the beginning of the year. Last week, sales increased fourfold compared to the previous week, while on peak humid weekends, sales increased more than tenfold.
Most systems and stores had prepared for the increased demand during the humid season in the North, but consumption exceeded expectations. "In recent years, sales of dehumidifiers have increased exponentially. The reason is that consumers are increasingly concerned about their health, indoor air quality, and better economic conditions . The devices are clearly effective and easily recognizable, so they are enthusiastically received," Mr. Minh Tan explained.
Dehumidifiers are typically categorized by their suction capacity, ranging from 10, 12, 18, 22, 28, 30 to 50 liters... suitable for different room sizes. For example, a 12L model can extract and condense up to 12 liters of water vapor per day from the air (actual figures may vary depending on usage conditions). Smaller models are suitable for bedrooms or small apartments, while larger models can be used for entire apartments or multi-story houses.
Surveys show that 12-liter water purifiers are the best-selling model due to their good price, suitable for most families, starting from just over 2 million VND. This segment also includes many brands such as Xiaomi, Lumias, NWT, Gree, and Nagakawa. However, this year, consumers are also gradually trending towards choosing higher-capacity purifiers, as the 20-30 liter models from these brands are also experiencing strong growth.
While the sub-6 million VND price segment is sold out at many stores, the higher-end segment still offers options, albeit limited. Prominent brands such as LG, Electrolux, and Sharp recorded increased sales in line with the overall market trend.
According to Ms. Nguyen Ha, Marketing Director of Hop Long E-commerce, in the last two years, Vietnamese people have been buying dehumidifiers more evenly throughout the year, not just focusing on the humid season. From September 2024 to January 2025, the company distributed more than 25,000 units of various brands to the market. In the past month, about 20,000 units were delivered to dealers, mainly Lumias and NWT. Xiaomi, in its first year of officially selling dehumidifiers in Vietnam, is achieving sales "much better than the company's expectations".
"Consumers used to think that humidifiers were only needed during the humid season, but in reality, year-round use ensures that humidity is maintained at an appropriate level, which is not only good for health but also for electronic devices and furniture in the house," Ms. Ha explained.
According to home appliance expert Nguyen Minh Tien, the effectiveness of dehumidifiers has been proven over many years, and users can easily see their benefits. However, the market lacks models that combine dehumidification with air purification that are sufficiently good. Most dehumidifiers only have air purification as a secondary function, with rudimentary filters that cannot handle fine dust as effectively as dedicated dehumidifiers. "Users have to buy two separate machines to ensure indoor air quality, which is inconvenient for small spaces," Mr. Tien noted.
Dedicated dehumidifiers operate using a compressor and condenser similar to air conditioners, but are more compact, capable of precisely controlling humidity according to preset settings, and are easy to move between rooms. In terms of power consumption and efficiency, dehumidifiers are also more optimal than air conditioners in dry mode when it comes to controlling humidity to the required level.
