Edinson Cavani is going through the most difficult period since joining Boca Juniors. The Uruguayan striker was booed by fans in his first start since September, when Boca drew 0-0 against Racing Club. He was then left out of the squad for the cup match against Gimnasia Chivilcoy.
Having joined Boca Juniors in August 2023, Cavani was a member of the team's leadership group. However, the former Manchester United star's goal-scoring performance declined significantly. In the 2025 season, he scored 5 goals, only a quarter of his 2024 tally. 2026 was even worse, with Cavani only playing 2 matches due to injury.
Oscar Ruggeri, a 1986 World Cup winner with Argentina and a former domestic league champion with Boca Juniors, believes Cavani should retire. "He has to stop," Ruggeri told Marca , "It's a shame that a star like him is booed, especially considering the enormous career he's had."
Ruggeri admitted he wasn't close to Cavani but felt heartbroken seeing his current situation. He believes playing in Argentina at nearly 40 is extremely demanding. He believes Cavani hasn't retired yet because he still wants to turn things around and leave with his head held high.
Injuries have been a major problem for Cavani in the final years of his career. Since February 2023, he has suffered 13 injuries according to Transfermarkt data, missing 36 matches. Most recently, Cavani had a lower back problem but still came on as a substitute in the match against Platense.
Last December, Cavani announced his retirement, ending a 20-year career with 458 goals for club and national team. However, the 39-year-old striker doesn't seem to be truly done yet. Despite winning 24 titles, mostly during his time at PSG, Cavani still craves to continue playing.
Now, the question is no longer about his glorious past, but whether his body and form will allow him to continue.
