The 2026 World Cup is expected to be the most commercially successful tournament in history. |
The 2026 World Cup marks a major turning point as it will feature 48 teams for the first time. The number of matches will also increase dramatically from 64 to 104, making it the longest and largest World Cup ever held. This expansion will generate enormous revenue from television rights, advertising, and commercial sponsorship deals.
According to calculations, FIFA expects to earn approximately $11 billion during the commercial cycle associated with the 2026 World Cup. Sponsorship deals with businesses alone will contribute nearly $2.7 billion , an increase of over 53% compared to the previous World Cup cycle.
This is currently FIFA's second-fastest-growing revenue source, second only to television rights. Although it remains the biggest "money-making machine," revenue from television only increased by about 29% compared to the 2019-2022 period.
The commercial boom was significantly boosted by the tournament being held in North America. The US market offered access to a host of multinational corporations and major brands that had not previously been deeply involved in FIFA's commercial campaigns at previous World Cups.
Sponsors currently contribute approximately one-quarter of FIFA's total revenue between 2023 and 2026, demonstrating the growing influence of the business sector on world football.
To protect the interests of its commercial partners, FIFA will continue to apply its clean stadium policy at the 2026 World Cup. Any advertising by brands not on the official sponsorship list will be removed or covered up during the tournament.
Even the commercial names of many stadiums will temporarily disappear to ensure maximum advertising value for FIFA's partners.
