There was a time when the area around Tan Son Nhat airport was frequently flooded when it rained, and many people joked that it was because it was surrounded by rivers...

Many people are surprised to realize this is true because around Tan Son Nhat airport there are many roads named after rivers from the three regions of the country.

In Tan Binh district, there are many streets named after rivers such as the Day River, the Thuong River, the Tien River, etc.

Statistics in Ward 2, Tan Binh District, in the area surrounding Tan Son Nhat Airport, show that there are 13 streets named after major rivers across the country. The highest concentration is along Truong Son Street from Hoang Van Thu Park towards the airport.

On the right are familiar street names such as: Tra Khuc, Song Day, Tien Giang, Cuu Long, then Hong Ha, Bach Dang. Further inland are Hat Giang, Thao River, Nhue River, Thuong River...

On the left side, heading from the airport towards Hoang Van Thu Park, there is a fairly wide road called Hau Giang. These roads are generally only a few hundred meters long, with 2 to 4 lanes, and run close together.

Due to their proximity to Tan Son Nhat Airport, these streets have a high concentration of services such as cafes, restaurants, eateries, banks, and hotels to cater to locals and tourists.

However, it still has its own unique charm: a quiet atmosphere, not as noisy and bustling as the streets. The houses are built in a large, villa style, surrounded by large, shady trees.

Living on Song Nhue Street, Mr. Van Binh (49 years old) shared that instead of naming streets after heroic martyrs or numbering them as usual, naming streets after rivers is a unique cultural feature and also a way to educate about national history.

According to Mr. Binh, naming roads is not simply about giving them names; they need to have some meaning so that when people living along the road and visitors from other places hear the name, they can sense the cultural beauty and rich history of the area.

"The city is planning to revise street names, and in my opinion, these factors need to be considered further. Incorrectly named streets should be corrected, and names that are not aesthetically pleasing should also be improved," Mr. Binh said.

In an area that isn't very large, having roads named after rivers across the three regions of the country is also a beautiful cultural aspect in the way roads are named.
