Innovating rice varieties and increasing production value.

QTO - In recent years, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, along with local authorities in the province, has intensified the testing of several new rice varieties to gradually replace older, degraded varieties with low yields and susceptibility to pests and diseases. Surveys have shown that many new rice variety trials in the province have yielded very promising results, opening up prospects for wider adoption in the future.

This winter-spring season, Mr. Le Cong Dung of the Bich La Agricultural Production, Business and Service Cooperative (Bich La Cooperative), Trieu Phong commune, boldly planted the DT68 rice variety on 0.5 hectares for trial. This is a purebred rice variety researched, selected, and developed by Dong Tam Agricultural Company Limited, with many outstanding advantages such as wide adaptability, short growing season of only about 110 days; strong stems, good resistance to lodging, and fairly good resistance to some major pests and diseases.

Mr. Dung stated that, after monitoring the growth process, the DT68 rice variety has beautiful leaves, strong stems, and flowers bloom uniformly within 4-5 days, with long panicles and a high number of plump grains per panicle. After harvest, the yield of fresh rice reached over 4 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), significantly higher than other varieties cultivated in the same field. Notably, the DT68 rice fields were almost completely free of pests and diseases throughout the growing season, significantly reducing the cost of pesticides.

According to Nguyen Tho Huu, Director of Bich La Cooperative, this year's winter-spring crop was considered a successful one. However, what was particularly noteworthy was that the DT68 rice variety yielded significantly higher productivity and output compared to the main varieties the cooperative was cultivating; it also demonstrated excellent adaptability to the soil conditions of Bich La in particular and Trieu Phong commune in general. Actual yields reached nearly 84 quintals/hectare, 20 quintals/hectare higher than the control variety HG12; households that invested in intensive farming and balanced fertilization achieved yields exceeding 90 quintals/hectare.

“With the outstanding results from the first trial, the cooperative plans to continue testing the DT68 rice variety in the summer-autumn season to further verify its ability to withstand different weather conditions. If the results remain positive, the cooperative will expand the cultivation area of this rice variety into a concentrated production zone in the coming years,” Mr. Huu said.

Meanwhile, at My Loc Thuong Cooperative in Le Thuy commune, the atmosphere in the fields is bustling these days as farmers are busily harvesting the TH998 rice variety. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang said that this is the first time he has cultivated the TH998 variety on an area of 3.5 sao (approximately 350 square meters), but the results exceeded expectations. The yield reached about 3.75 quintals per sao, the rice plants grew evenly, were strong, less prone to lodging, had long panicles, and firm grains.

“The TH998 variety is easy to cultivate, has fewer pests and diseases compared to the varieties I planted before, and with a company guaranteeing the purchase of the harvest, I feel very secure. Next season, I will continue to register to plant this rice variety,” Mr. Quang shared.

According to Vo Thanh Dat, Director of My Loc Thuong Cooperative, with the support of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, the cooperative has introduced the TH998 rice variety into production on an area of 5 hectares with 31 participating households. This is a pure rice variety researched and developed by the International Agricultural and Trade Joint Stock Company and was granted a circulation permit by the Department of Crop Production in 2023.

In the first cropping season, the TH998 rice variety demonstrated good adaptability to the soil conditions in the area. Its growth period was approximately 120 days; there were no signs of blast or brown spot disease; and the rate of leaf-rolling caterpillars was very low, significantly reducing pesticide costs.

The actual yield reached approximately 75 quintals/hectare, 3-5 quintals/hectare higher than other commonly grown rice varieties in the area. Notably, the entire crop was purchased directly from the field by Bac Mien Trung Agricultural Development Investment Co., Ltd. at a price of 5,300 VND/kg of fresh rice, resulting in a profit of over 18 million VND/hectare after deducting costs.

"The cooperative will continue to monitor and evaluate the results in subsequent seasons and recommend that the relevant authorities consider adding TH998 to the local quality rice variety structure in the near future," Mr. Dat said.

According to Bui Phuoc Trang, Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in order to have a basis for advising and proposing suitable new rice varieties with high yield and quality for inclusion in the crop structure for production in the province, this winter-spring season, the department has coordinated with 15 seed production and trading units inside and outside the province to manage and monitor the trial production of 31 new rice varieties, including 23 pure rice varieties and 8 hybrid rice varieties. Production has shown that most of these rice varieties have fairly good plant height, tillering ability, pest and disease resistance, and lodging resistance.

The yield of purebred rice varieties reached 65-80 quintals/hectare, with typical varieties like DT68 and VNR88 yielding 5-15 quintals/hectare higher than commercially grown varieties; hybrid rice varieties averaged 75-85 quintals/hectare, 5-10 quintals/hectare higher than commercially grown hybrid rice varieties in the area, such as Boi Uu 9 and KH805. The rice quality of most tested varieties was highly rated, with delicious, sticky, and soft cooked rice, meeting market demands well. The selling price ranged from 6,800-7,000 VND/kg, comparable to rice varieties currently grown commercially.

“Based on this, the sub-department will continue to coordinate with relevant units to expand testing of effective varieties on various soil types and cultivation conditions in the coming seasons, in order to conduct a more comprehensive evaluation before proposing their inclusion in the mass production seed structure in the province. Regarding seed production and trading units, it is suggested that they develop plans to link with localities and cooperatives to build large-scale fields along the value chain from production to consumption so that farmers can confidently expand production,” Mr. Bui Phuoc Trang added.
