Changes in the heroic "land of steel" homeland

STO - During the war, the people of Gia Hoa commune constantly strived, overcoming hardships and demonstrating strong patriotism and solidarity. After the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, in 1982, Gia Hoa commune, My Xuyen district (Soc Trang province) was divided into Gia Hoa 1 and Gia Hoa 2 communes. From those early days full of difficulties, Gia Hoa 1 commune has risen strongly today, leaving its mark on the path of development.

In the early days after liberation, Gia Hoa 1 commune faced countless difficulties, especially in restoring production and improving the lives of its people. One of the biggest challenges was that more than 70% of the cultivated land was affected by acidity and salinity, making agricultural production extremely difficult. “The average rice yield was only about 3 tons/ha, the general level of education was low, the percentage of poor and near-poor households reached 70% of the total number of households, schools lacked teachers and classrooms, and the health station lacked medicine and equipment. People had to live in extremely difficult conditions,” recalled Mr. Do Van Mep, from Vinh A hamlet, Gia Hoa 1 commune.

Under the leadership of the Party Committee and the unity of the people, Gia Hoa 1 commune has entered a new phase of development. Crop and livestock farming have shifted in the right direction, and farmers have maintained the shrimp-rice farming model combined with vegetable cultivation and livestock raising, bringing stable income. The infrastructure system has been improved, roads have been upgraded, and the living space of the people has become bright, green, clean, beautiful, and safe. In 2018, Gia Hoa 1 was recognized as a commune meeting the standards of a new rural area, and in 2023 it was recognized as a commune meeting the standards of an advanced new rural area.

The work of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses is progressing on schedule. To date, the commune has completed the construction and repair of 40 houses for poor households, near-poor households, families with meritorious services to the revolution, and relatives of martyrs, achieving a 100% completion rate. By the end of 2024, the entire commune will only have 10 poor households remaining, accounting for 0.45%.

Ms. Nguyen Hong Phuong, from Dinh Hoa hamlet, Gia Hoa 1 commune, said: “I am truly happy and proud to witness the changes in Gia Hoa 1 commune over the past years. Under the leadership of the Party Committee and the unity of all the people, our commune has overcome difficulties and entered a new stage of development. I believe that in the future, the commune will continue to rise even stronger.”

Throughout the resistance wars, Gia Hoa 1 commune had 65 mothers who were awarded and posthumously awarded the title of Heroic Vietnamese Mother by the State (2 mothers are still alive), 349 wounded and sick soldiers, 307 people who contributed to the revolution, and was recognized by the Prime Minister as a safe zone commune.

With its glorious revolutionary tradition, Gia Hoa 1 commune has always paid special attention to caring for Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, families with meritorious contributions to the revolution, and relatives of martyrs. The Party Committee and the people always demonstrate the national principle of "drinking water, remembering the source," caring for the material and spiritual lives of those who have contributed to the revolution.

Mr. Le Thanh Thuy, from Dinh Hoa hamlet, Gia Hoa 1 commune, said: “My family has received attention, visits, and gifts from the local authorities during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year). I feel very touched and proud, and I often encourage my children and grandchildren to abide by the Party's guidelines and the State's policies and laws.”

The Party Committee and people of Gia Hoa commune are proud to have been awarded the title of "Hero of the People's Armed Forces" by the Party and State; the "Third-Class Bronze Medal" in 1967; and the title of "Hero of the Steel Land" in 1973. Every step on the path of development of Gia Hoa 1 commune today is closely linked to the great contributions of the heroic martyrs, policy beneficiary families, and the people.

Comrade Nguyen Thi Xuan Huong, Secretary of the Gia Hoa 1 Commune Party Committee, stated: “The commune Party Committee expresses its deepest gratitude to the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the nation, and for the happiness of the people. The heroic deeds of the martyrs, the families of policy beneficiaries, and retired officials will forever be shining examples for us to follow. The commune Party Committee will continue to lead Gia Hoa 1 commune in comprehensive development in all fields: economic development, infrastructure construction, improving the quality of life for the people, ensuring social security, paying more attention to developing sustainable agricultural production models, developing trade, services, and auxiliary industries, creating more jobs and increasing income for the people. We will also effectively carry out the work of caring for families with meritorious contributions to the revolution; preserving and promoting historical relics and red addresses of our homeland so that today's and future generations will continue to understand and be proud of the glorious history of our people's struggle.” "I believe that, with the determination of the Party Committee and the unity of the people, Gia Hoa 1 will continue to achieve many successes, rise strongly in the new era, and build our homeland into an increasingly prosperous, beautiful, and civilized place."

Under the leadership of the Party and with the unity of the people, Gia Hoa 1 commune will continue to uphold its heroic traditions, determined to build an increasingly prosperous and beautiful homeland, contributing to the common cause of the nation in this era of national progress.
