Going back in time to before 1943, Nam Lau commune was known as Xanh Pai area. During that period, the people of the commune were enlightened by revolutionary ideals, and the Struggle Guerrilla Team was established to fight together, demanding a reduction in taxes, resisting conscription and forced labor, and demanding a share of rice... and then participating in the seizure of power in 1945. Today's Nam Lau commune was established based on the consolidation of the entire natural area and population of the communes of Nam Lau, Pung Tra, and Chieng Bom. After the merger, the commune has a total natural area of 24,763 hectares, with 3,508 households and over 18,120 inhabitants, belonging to four main ethnic groups: Thai, Khang, Mong, and Kho Mu, living in 39 villages. The merger has helped Nam Lau commune expand its development space, optimize resources, and attract investment.
In a New Year's story, Comrade Cam Bun Loc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Lau commune, informed: Nam Lau is a commune with a large geographical area, mainly inhabited by ethnic minorities, and the lives of the people are still facing many difficulties. Right from the implementation of the two-tiered local government model, with the spirit of "6 clear points" – "Clear person, clear task, clear time, clear responsibility, clear product, clear result" – the commune's Party committee and government have led and directed departments, agencies, and units to focus on effectively implementing socio -economic development and national defense and security goals in the area; improving the lives and incomes of the people.

Given the challenging terrain of high and steep hills, the commune has directed its people to develop and protect over 12,400 hectares of forest, providing additional income and preventing soil erosion. Simultaneously, it focuses on developing coffee cultivation, a key crop of Nam Lau, aiming to improve farming efficiency per unit area. The commune has planned coffee growing areas, limiting spontaneous conversion and ensuring the stability of concentrated production zones. People are encouraged to replant old, low-yielding areas. Priority is given to using high-yielding, high-quality, disease-resistant varieties suitable for local conditions. Currently, the entire commune has approximately 3,000 households cultivating over 1,900 hectares of coffee, of which about 1,770 hectares are producing crops. The past coffee harvest was bountiful, with record-high prices of 28-30 thousand VND/kg of fresh coffee cherries. On average, each hectare yielded 8 tons of cherries, generating over 200 million VND in revenue. Coffee plants have proven to be the main crop, bringing high economic efficiency and helping people here escape poverty.
As one of the villages with the largest coffee growing area in Nam Lau commune, Nong Ten currently has 140 hectares of coffee plantations in production. Mr. Ca Van Hanh, Party Secretary and Village Head, happily stated: "This year, the villagers are celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year) more joyfully thanks to the bumper coffee harvest and good prices. All 44 households in the village grow coffee; even the smallest plots have at least 1 hectare, while larger plots have 5-6 hectares. The total coffee yield for the village is over 1,000 tons, with an average per capita income exceeding 40 million VND per year. Only 4 households remain poor; the Party Committee has assigned Party members to assist them in escaping poverty in the near future."

Every spring, Nam Lau seems to put on a new coat. Crops like upland rice, cassava, and corn gradually give way to the green of paddy fields, coffee plantations, and fruit trees. Currently, the commune cultivates over 400 hectares of double-cropping rice, 220 hectares of fruit trees, 38 hectares of various vegetables, and 10 hectares of taro. Livestock farming is developing towards commercial production, with the total number of livestock and poultry reaching nearly 72,000, bringing significant income to the people. The infrastructure projects invested by the State have created a new look for the commune, gradually meeting production requirements and improving the quality of life for the people. Most encouragingly, in 2025, Nam Lau completed the program to eliminate 137 temporary houses for poor households with a total budget of over 7.7 billion VND; and is currently implementing the program to eliminate temporary houses for 16 more households using funds from the "Fund for the Poor" of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province. 277 households escaped poverty, contributing to reducing the overall poverty rate in the commune to 17.1%.

Building on the spirit and strength of unity, self-reliance, and with faith and hope in the new era, the Party Committee, government, and people of Nam Lau commune continue to promote economic development, ensuring stability and sustainability. They will continue to effectively implement the province's economic restructuring plan, linked with the transformation of the growth model, maximizing and effectively utilizing resources to promote socio-economic development, while simultaneously eradicating poverty and aiming for a more prosperous and beautiful life.
