Welcoming and burying martyrs' remains after 54 years of searching and verifying identities

After 54 years of searching and verifying the identity, on the morning of April 15, at the Cultural House of Residential Group No. 22, Ngoc Thuy Ward (Long Bien, Hanoi), the family, unit, and locality solemnly held a ceremony to receive and bury the remains of martyr Nguyen Van Thuong at the local martyr cemetery.

Offering incense to commemorate martyr Nguyen Van Thuong, Lieutenant General Tran Tan Hung, Vice President of the Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs, said: "Martyr Nguyen Van Thuong is one of the cases in which the Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs coordinated with the family and the Engineering Command in searching for martyrs' remains and verifying information, from taking DNA samples, matching identification, to supporting 100% of the cost of DNA identification. Supporting families of martyrs to conduct identification and handing over accurate identification results to relatives of martyrs is one of the important tasks of our Association. After 15 years of operation, the Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs has socialized the work of genetic identification and identification verification for hundreds of martyrs." In the eulogy for the martyrs, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngoc Thuy Ward (Long Bien District, Hanoi) Hoang Van Luc said: Martyr Nguyen Van Thuong was born in 1939, in Hai Hung (now Hung Yen Province), got married in 1964, and had 1 daughter. In September 1965, Nguyen Van Thuong and his younger brother volunteered to join the army. He was assigned to the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Unit, the Engineer Command, fighting on the Southern Front. On October 1, 1971, he fought heroically and died in Kim Thuy Commune, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province. (Photo: Mai Hoa)

The only child of martyr Nguyen Van Thuong, Major Nguyen Thi Mien (dark shirt, standing in the front row) shared: “I have always wanted to find my father's grave, but this is really not an easy task. I cannot express how grateful my family is to have found my father's remains after 54 years. We were supported by the Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs to conduct scientific and accurate DNA testing, and the Party Committee, local authorities, and people, along with the unit, organized a solemn and thoughtful ceremony to receive and bury my father's remains. With her future daughter-in-law, she burned incense at the Memorial of the Fatherland in honor of the martyrs at Doc La Martyrs' Cemetery (Yen Vien, Gia Lam), Major Nguyen Thi Mien (left) emotionally said: "The ceremony to receive and bury the remains of my father's martyrs was held in a complete and warm and affectionate manner. With the blessing of the martyrs' spirits, my son and future daughter-in-law have now set a wedding date in the next few months. The presence of the future daughter-in-law on the day of welcoming their grandfather to the martyrs' cemetery near the family's residence brings even more warmth and affection to the family."
