The USGS reported that the first earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located 21 km east of the coastal town of Moron and at a depth of 10 km. The second earthquake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter 16 km southwest of Moron and at a depth of 10 km. The USGS identified this as a rare double earthquake.

The tremors were clearly felt in the capital Caracas, about 160 km from the epicenter, as well as in many areas of northern Venezuela and some parts of Colombia. People panicked and fled their homes, offices, and shopping centers to find safety.
Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said that some buildings and homes were damaged, with large cracks appearing in the walls or collapsing. Authorities have asked residents to temporarily leave affected structures and cut off gas supplies in some areas to prevent fires.

According to local and international media, many buildings in the Altamira and Palos Grandes areas of Caracas have been damaged, and Maiquetía International Airport has also reported some damage. Rescue teams and emergency services have been deployed to the affected areas to search for trapped people and assess the damage.
The U.S. tsunami warning system issued a tsunami threat for several coastal areas of Venezuela and Caribbean islands, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire. However, the warning was lifted about an hour later.
Venezuelan authorities have not yet released official casualty figures. However, the USGS PAGER disaster assessment system warns of a very high risk of serious casualties and damage, along with the possibility of strong aftershocks. The USGS believes this disaster requires a national and international response.

Venezuela lies on a complex tectonic boundary where the Caribbean plate interacts with the South American plate. This is the cause of the formation of major fault systems such as Boconó, El Pilar, and San Sebastián, which means the country frequently faces the risk of earthquakes.
