Caring for and helping children

Nguyen Tuan Kiet, a 6th-grade student at Nguyen Thai Binh Secondary School (Hai Van Ward), is the youngest child in a poor family. His father passed away early, leaving his mother to single-handedly raise Kiet and his two brothers. Every day, Kiet walks to school by himself because his mother is busy working to support the family. Despite the difficulties, he has consistently maintained excellent academic performance for many years.

In a similar situation, Nguyen Ngoc Uyen (Hoa Khanh Nam ward) also faces hardship. Her mother passed away early, her father is a manual laborer, and Uyen lives with her elderly maternal grandparents. Uyen is known for being kind, studious, and always helping her friends. Because she doesn't have a bicycle, Uyen has to walk to school or ask friends to give her a ride.

Understanding the plight of disadvantaged children, in September 2025, the Da Nang City Children's Protection Fund, in coordination with Bao Viet Life Insurance Company of Da Nang, donated 10 bicycles to support disadvantaged students in Hoa Khanh and Hai Van wards, including Kiet and Uyen, with a total cost of 20 million VND. These simple bicycles have become a means to help these children fulfill their dreams of going to school.

The City Children's Protection Fund also cares for children who are disadvantaged in terms of health. Ngo Quoc Vuong, 11 years old (Ba Na commune), suffers from a congenital spinal cord tumor and cannot walk. His entire childhood has been confined to a small bed and the loving care of his parents. In April 2025, the City Children's Protection Fund donated a wheelchair worth over 4 million VND to Vuong to facilitate his mobility.

For example, Vo Nguyen Thuy Tien (Hoa Khanh Bac ward) suffers from congenital cerebral palsy, unable to sit or perform daily activities independently. Thuy Tien's family is poor and has an unstable income. Understanding her hardships, in May 2025, the City Children's Protection Fund donated a specialized wheelchair for children with cerebral palsy to Tien. In the same period, seven other disabled children also received wheelchairs and specialized vehicles for children with cerebral palsy, with a total cost of over 31.5 million VND.

For the sake of children, give them a livelihood.

Beyond providing direct support to children, the City Children's Protection Fund also implements livelihood support programs to help disadvantaged families stabilize their lives, thereby creating a foundation for better care for the children.

Recently, the City Children's Protection Fund, in collaboration with the Australian Global Relief Organization (AOGWR), provided livelihood support to 17 disadvantaged households with children in Hoa Tien and Hoa Vang communes, with a total budget of 100 million VND. Of these, 11 households received chicken breeds, 5 received breeding cows, and 1 received breeding pigs.

Ms. Huynh Thi Thuy Tam (Khuong My village, Hoa Vang commune) is one of the households that received support in the form of breeding cows, worth 10 million VND. Ms. Tam suffers from kidney failure, her husband works as a manual laborer with an unstable income, and their two young children are of school age. “This gift is a source of hope for my family to build up our economy and provide for my children's education. I will take good care of them, expand the herd, and improve our lives,” Ms. Tam said.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Hoa Vang commune, said: "With the livelihoods provided by the Children's Protection Fund, we will provide technical guidance and supervision to ensure effectiveness. This will help families escape poverty sustainably and confidently care for their children."

Established in 1997, the Da Nang City Children's Protection Fund (under the Department of Health) operates with the goal of mobilizing resources from within and outside the country to protect, care for, and educate children in special circumstances.

From 2024 to mid-2025, the Fund received over 3.1 billion VND in donations from organizations, businesses, and individuals. From these resources, the Fund awarded 260 scholarships, 200 sets of school supplies, and 150 bicycles to disadvantaged children; and supported clean water projects for two rural preschools in the former Hoa Vang district.

In addition, the children's health care program has been widely implemented. Last year, the Fund coordinated screening for congenital heart defects for over 95,500 children, detected and supported surgery for 55 children with heart disease; and donated medical equipment and rehabilitation tools to 32 disabled children. Simultaneously, livelihood programs helped 12 poor households with children in the former Hoa Vang district develop livestock farming and improve their income.

Deputy Director of the Department of Health, Doan Thi Hoai Nhi, stated: “Over the years, the activities of the City's Children's Protection Fund have not only provided material support but also sown seeds of love, instilled faith and resilience in every difficult situation. In the future, we will continue to mobilize social resources and expand programs to care for, protect, and educate children, ensuring that no child is left behind.”
