The central exchange rate for VND/USD today was announced by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) at 24,137 VND/USD, a decrease of 35 dong compared to the trading session on September 16th.

Currently, the permitted exchange rate for commercial banks ranges from 23,400 to 25,450 VND/USD. The USD exchange rate has also been brought within the buying and selling range of 23,400 to 25,450 VND/USD by the State Bank of Vietnam's Exchange Department.

The USD exchange rate at banks and the domestic USD price this morning recorded a decrease. Specifically, Vietcombank 's buying rate was 24,350 and the selling rate was 24,720, a decrease of 10 dong compared to the selling rate on September 16th. The current buying and selling price of USD is in the range of 24,000 - 25,500 VND/USD.

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), closed at 101.11 points, down 0.13 points from September 16, 2024.

The US dollar hit its lowest level in over a year against the yen today, amid growing expectations that the Federal Reserve may make a sharp interest rate cut later this week.

The Fed is expected to announce an interest rate cut of at least 25 basis points at the conclusion of its September policy meeting on Wednesday.

But reports from the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times last week fueled speculation among traders that the central bank could make an even more drastic cut of 50 basis points.

The futures market is pricing in a 61% probability of a 50 basis point rate cut, up from around 15% last week.

Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex in New York, said: " There's really only one story today and it's a continuation of what we saw last week: after the CPI, the market felt comfortable with a 25 basis point rate hike but many suspected the Fed had fabricated a narrative to bring back a 50 basis point increase ."

" The markets have reacted accordingly. And in fact, they are still adjusting ."

The US dollar traded as low as 139.58 yen in Asian hours, its lowest level since July 2023. The latest decline was 0.10% to 140.690 yen.

The US dollar index, a measure of the currency's value against six other currencies including the euro, yen, and pound sterling, fell 0.29% to 100.73.

Chandler added: " I think part of the price movement may have been exaggerated due to the fact that China, Japan, and South Korea are on holiday today ."

US Treasury yields have fallen ahead of the highly anticipated Fed meeting, especially as the likelihood of a half-point interest rate cut is increasing.

The benchmark 10-year yield has fallen 30 basis points in about two weeks. The two-year yield, more closely tied to monetary policy expectations, fell 2.5 basis points to 3.5509%, down from around 3.94% two weeks earlier.

Investors are also paying attention to the Bank of Japan's interest rate decision on Friday, as the central bank is expected to keep its short-term policy interest rate target unchanged at 0.25% after having raised rates twice this year.

BOJ board members indicated their desire to see higher interest rates, and the narrowing gap between interest rates in Japan and other major currencies fueled the yen's appreciation and led to the cancellation of billions of dollars worth of yen-denominated interest rate arbitrage deals.
