The Japanese Yen exchange rates surveyed at various banks this morning, May 25, 2024, are as follows:

At Vietcombank , the Japanese Yen exchange rate is 157.13 VND/JPY for buying and 166.31 VND/JPY for selling, a decrease of 0.4 VND in the buying rate and 0.42 VND in the selling rate.

At Vietinbank , the Yen exchange rate decreased by 1.01 VND on the buying side and increased by 0.74 VND on the selling side, equivalent to 158.01 VND/JPY and 167.71 VND/JPY respectively.

At BIDV Bank, the Japanese Yen exchange rate decreased by 0.36 VND on the buying side and 0.47 VND on the selling side, reaching 158 VND/JPY and 166.4 VND/JPY respectively.

At Agribank, the Japanese Yen exchange rate is 158.46 VND/JPY for buying and 166.26 VND/JPY for selling – a decrease of 0.17 VND in the buying rate and 0.19 VND in the selling rate.

At Eximbank, the buying rate decreased by 0.45 VND and the selling rate decreased by 0.43 VND, reaching 159.44 VND/JPY and 164.82 VND/JPY respectively.

At Techcombank, the Japanese Yen exchange rate decreased by 0.38 VND on the buying side and 0.34 VND on the selling side, reaching 155.5 VND/JPY and 167.92 VND/JPY respectively.

At Sacombank, the Japanese Yen exchange rate decreased by 0.24 VND on the buying side and 0.26 VND on the selling side, corresponding to 160.23 VND/JPY and 165.24 VND/JPY respectively.

At NCB Bank, the Japanese Yen exchange rate is 157.92 VND/JPY for buying and 165.67 VND/JPY for selling (corresponding to a decrease of 0.18 VND for buying and 1.01 VND for selling).

At HSBC Bank, the Japanese Yen exchange rate decreased by 0.13 VND on the buying side and 0.1 VND on the selling side, reaching 157.79 VND/JPY and 164.48 VND/JPY respectively.

According to a survey by the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Sacombank has the highest Japanese Yen buying rate today , while HSBC has the lowest selling rate among banks .

Forecast of Yen exchange rate trends

Japan is prepared to take appropriate action in the market "at any time" to counter excessive volatility in the yen, the country's top currency diplomat Masato Kanda said on Friday, while issuing a new warning about the possibility of renewed exchange rate intervention.

Kanda also said he regularly maintains close contact with foreign partners, particularly in the US, on issues including financial markets.

"In a flexible exchange rate regime, we wouldn't need to intervene if currency fluctuations were stable. But if there are excessive fluctuations that negatively impact the economy, we need to act, and doing so is reasonable," Kanda told reporters.

"We are prepared to act at any time if necessary to counter currency fluctuations," he said after accompanying Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki to the first day of the G7 finance leaders' meeting in the northern Italian city of Stresa.

Kanda made his remarks a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that currency interventions should only be used rarely and in a way that is clearly communicated.

Kanda said that at the G7 meeting, Japan told its partners that they needed to be wary of excessive volatility in currency markets driven by speculative activities.

He added that Japan also stated at the meeting that it is important to “respond appropriately” to excessive, chaotic movements in the currency market that could harm the economy.

He said Japan would push for a joint communiqué from G7 finance leaders that includes language reaffirming the group's position that excessive currency volatility and fluctuation are undesirable.

Kanda, who oversees Japan's monetary policy as vice finance minister in charge of international affairs, declined to comment when asked about the recent decline in the yen.

The yen has lost 11% against the dollar this year due to expectations that the US Federal Reserve will not rush to cut interest rates, which will widen the gap between US interest rates and Japan's ultra-low rates.
