'Doraemon' beats 'Mission: Impossible 8'

According to statistics from the independent box office tracking website Box Office Vietnam , the latest Doraemon film, *Nobita and the Adventure into the World in the Picture Book*, sold over 350,000 tickets across 8,370 screenings. As of June 2nd, total revenue exceeded 112 billion VND, likely breaking the record of *Doraemon: Nobita and the Earth Symphony* (2024) – 147 billion VND – to become the highest-grossing anime film ever in domestic theaters.

The film had early screenings on May 17th and 18th before its official release on May 23rd. Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of Box Office Vietnam , commented that the closure of cinemas on the first two weekends of its release did not significantly affect box office revenue, as the characters are familiar to global audiences and the project's content is highly regarded. Furthermore, word-of-mouth also contributed to attracting viewers to theaters.

The 44th Doraemon movie, directed by Yukiyo Teramoto, celebrates the 45th anniversary of the series. The story follows Nobita and his friends as they travel to Artoria, a medieval European kingdom filled with valuable paintings. There, they meet Claire, a princess who has been missing for four years, Mairo, a boy who loves to paint, and Chai, a bat. However, their joy is short-lived as a dark force emerges, threatening the existence of Artoria and their new friends.

The project strikes a balance between humor and emotion, with both main and supporting characters contributing to the film's depth. One of the elements that makes it unique compared to previous works is the lesson about artistic value. The music , especially the classic song "Yume wo Kanaete Doraemon ," takes viewers back to their childhood memories with the robotic cat.

However, the voice acting by Salim and Hai Long (playing the queen and king of the kingdom of Artoria) received negative feedback. On social media forums, many people criticized the lackluster quality of the dubbing, saying it lacked emotional depth. Some viewers even wanted the distributor to change the voice actors.

Coming in second at the weekend box office was Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning , earning 15 billion VND, bringing its total revenue to over 21 billion VND. Experts believe the film was "overshadowed" by the Japanese production, as the summer movie season is the "golden time" for animation, a popular choice for many families. Doraemon is for audiences of all ages, while Tom Cruise's project is for viewers aged 16 and older.

Third place went to Disney's Lilo & Stitch , earning nearly 10 billion VND, bringing its total to 19 billion VND after more than a week of release. Following closely behind was the Vietnamese animated film *Cricket: The Adventure to the Muddy Village* with an opening weekend of 6.5 billion VND. While less competitive than international projects, this is still a positive figure for the domestic animation industry. Previously, the producers stated they felt no pressure competing with major brands. A positive point is the beautiful visuals and special effects. The animals are designed vividly, with distinct characteristics, and variations related to age and gender are added.

The horror film Bring Her Back from A24 closed out the top 5 with 2.8 billion VND. The film tells the story of two siblings, Andy and Piper, who encounter many mysterious events when they move in with their guardian in a new house.
