Specifically, at the close of trading, the Dow Jones rose 345.54 points, or 0.67%, to 52,016.57 points. The S&P 500 fell 41.85 points, or 0.55%, to 7,512.44 points, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 301.13 points, or 1.15%, to 26,382.81 points, after recording strong gains in the previous session.
The decline stemmed from investors selling off highly valued technology stocks during the session, with semiconductor stocks falling sharply after soaring in the previous three sessions. SpaceX shares rose, but the momentum has eased. Analysts suggest that many investors are cautiously awaiting the Federal Reserve's policy announcement after its June 17 meeting, which is expected to keep interest rates unchanged in the coming months.
Meanwhile, developments in the Middle East conflict pushed oil prices to a three-month low on June 16.
Specifically, Brent crude futures fell $4.21 (5.1%) to close at $78.96 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell $4.70 (5.8%) to $76.05 per barrel. This is the lowest closing price for both benchmark crudes since early March 2026. The main drivers of the price declines came from details of a temporary agreement to end the conflict in the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, allowing Iranian oil to return to the market soon. In addition, China's May 2026 refinery capacity fell to its lowest level in nearly four years, combined with concerns about weakening demand due to the Fed's expected decision to keep interest rates unchanged, also impacting the energy market outlook.
At the same time, the prospect of the Fed keeping interest rates unchanged, as well as the temporary US-Iran agreement, pushed world gold prices up during the same trading session. Accordingly, at 0:55 AM on June 17 (Vietnam time), the spot gold price increased by 0.8% to $4,338.86 per ounce, marking the highest level since June 5. The price of US gold futures for August 2026 also closed the session slightly higher by 0.1% at $4,354.4 per ounce.
