According to observations by reporters from Giao Thong Newspaper, from the days before the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon 2024 until now, the giant dragon statue at Thuy Tien Lake in Thuy Bang commune, Hue City, has attracted a large number of locals and foreign tourists who came to check in, following information that the giant dragon statue would be demolished after Tet.
The dragon statue at Thuy Tien Lake amusement park is 20 meters high and approximately 50 meters long, coiled around the "jewel-shaped" pavilion on Thuy Tien Lake.
The giant dragon statue, an "oasis," is located within the grounds of Thuy Tien Lake amusement park (Thuy Bang commune, Hue City), and is connected to the surrounding area by three pedestrian bridges.
Many locals and tourists took advantage of the nice weather to visit and take photos with the unique dragon statue before it was demolished.
The entrance to the abandoned park, which was once featured in foreign news, has been dismantled, but barriers remain, forcing cars to park while visitors walk in, while motorbikes can still drive near the giant dragon statue.
Items such as the abandoned large-scale musical fountain located opposite the giant dragon statue have been dismantled.
Tourists stop to take photos from the pedestrian bridge leading to the dragon statue and admire the view from the dragon's mouth.
Take photos from the dragon's throat and strike a check-in pose right in its mouth.
Many young people even posed from the outside to capture the entire giant dragon statue in their photos.
The Thuy Tien Lake Entertainment Center project in the Thien An hill area, Hue City (Thua Thien Hue province) was started by Hue Ancient Capital Tourism Company in 2001 and put into operation for tourism purposes in 2004 with a total investment of over 70 billion VND, including many items such as an aquarium, a water music stage, water games, walking paths around the lake, etc.
Among the highlights was the aquarium, with its dragon-shaped architecture winding around a pavilion in the middle of the lake. However, after operating for a short time and experiencing poor tourism results, the project was abandoned.
In 2008, Haco Hue Company took over and planned to rebuild it into a high-end integrated eco-tourism complex, including a conference center, spa, restaurants, accommodation, art performances, sports facilities, an amusement park, and outdoor camping. However, the company was unable to complete the project, and the park was abandoned. This location has been mentioned in many foreign newspapers.
In 2017, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province reclaimed the land for the project and handed it over to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment for management. In 2022, the government decided to invest in a project to renovate the area into a community park with a total investment of approximately 20 billion VND. The investment scale includes the construction of a walking path around the lake with a length of more than 2km and a width of 4.5-6m, with a granite surface on a concrete base; the renovation of an existing concrete road about 210m long; and investment in lighting, water supply and drainage systems.
However, due to the protracted and complicated process of handling the assets of the previous project investor, the renovation work has not been carried out recently. Currently, the winning bidder for the assets at Thuy Tien Lake Entertainment Center has dismantled some items such as the musical fountain park area and the crescent-shaped bridge on the road through the musical fountain park area..., but the giant dragon statue shows no signs of being dismantled.
According to the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Land Development Center, after revoking the project, the Provincial Civil Enforcement Agency has now proceeded with auctioning and demolishing the structures in the Thuy Tien Lake area to hand over the land to the local authorities.
The unit also requested the winning bidder to complete the work by January 2024; however, the winning bidder is requesting an extension due to high water levels in the reservoir.
After years of abandonment, the giant dragon statue has deteriorated and become damaged.
