The Ministry of Education and Training announced plans to establish three more regional universities in the Central Highlands, the Southern Delta, and the western mountainous region of Northern Vietnam.
During a meeting with university officials and lecturers in mid-August, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son stated that there are currently three regional universities nationwide: Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, and Da Nang University.
The Politburo 's 2022 resolution outlines the development of six strategic regions: the Northern Midlands and Mountains; the Mekong Delta; the Central Highlands; the Southeast; the North Central and Central Coastal regions; and the Red River Delta. Therefore, the education sector will consider establishing and developing several more regional universities.
"It is expected that the Central Highlands, the Southern Delta, and the western mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam will soon have regional universities to ensure the training and development of human resources for regional development," Mr. Son said.
This is part of the network planning for higher education and teacher training institutions for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, which the Ministry of Education and Training is currently researching.

According to current regulations, regional universities are public higher education institutions under the Ministry of Education and Training; they are subject to territorial management by the People's Committee of the province where the regional university is located; and they have legal personality, their own seal, and bank account. Regional universities provide multi-disciplinary training and research, comprising many member universities and faculties, operating similarly to other universities (the two National Universities, Hanoi University of Science and Technology).
Of the three existing regional universities, Hue University was established earliest (in 1957), while Thai Nguyen University and Da Nang University were both founded in 1994 through the merger of several surrounding universities.
