Having worked for nearly 10 years at the Policy Department of the Provincial Military Command, Captain Phan Thi Thu Ha has participated three times in the temporary repatriation team, carrying out the task of searching for and collecting the remains of fallen soldiers.
The most recent repatriation of the remains of martyr Tran Chu (1930 - 1962) took place in December 2023. Martyr Tran Chu was from Vu Phuc village, Binh Quang commune, Binh Khe district, Binh Dinh province. He enlisted in March 1954 in unit C5E259 of the Engineering Command.
During the fighting against the American bombing raids on North Vietnam, he was seriously wounded and treated by doctors at Military Hospital 109, but he did not survive.
After more than 60 years, officers, staff, and soldiers of the Provincial Military Command searched for and collected the remains of martyr Tran Chu, based on information provided by his family, hometown, and unit. The moment of finding the remains of martyr Tran Chu left a deep emotional impact on all who witnessed it.
Captain Phan Thi Thu Ha stated: "The search for and collection of the remains of fallen soldiers is not only a political task but also a sacred one, expressing profound gratitude to the heroic martyrs who dedicated and sacrificed themselves for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland."
Therefore, all officers and soldiers in the temporary repatriation team spared no effort or hardship to fulfill their mission, hoping to find the remains of the heroic martyrs and bring them back to their families and hometowns.
Every time they find the remains of a fallen soldier, the team members are overcome with emotion, as if they've found a loved one. Everyone reminds each other to search thoroughly and cherish every memento, no matter how small.”
Vinh Phuc province has nearly 15,000 martyrs, and to date, the province has collected and repatriated nearly 12,000 remains. Since the re-establishment of the province (in 1997), it has searched for and collected 86 remains of martyrs who died in the province, including 21 remains of Laotian martyrs and 65 remains of Vietnamese martyrs.
The Provincial Military Command, in coordination with local authorities and the families of fallen soldiers, organized a solemn and thoughtful handover, memorial service, and burial ceremony, fulfilling the wishes of the people and the families of the fallen soldiers.
Currently, officers, staff, and soldiers of the Provincial Military Command are continuing to carry out their duties with the highest determination. The search and repatriation of the remains of fallen soldiers is a matter of special concern for the Party and the State, which are creating all favorable conditions in terms of personnel, facilities, and funding to support officers and soldiers in performing their duties.
In today's digital age, officers and soldiers of the Provincial Military Command can contact organizations involved in searching for and collecting the remains of fallen soldiers through websites and social media to exchange and provide useful information, facilitating the search for the remains of fallen soldiers.
However, the search for and collection of the remains of fallen soldiers in the province still faces many difficulties. The majority of fallen soldiers in the province died during the resistance war against the French.
Over time, the terrain and landmarks have changed significantly due to urbanization, making it very difficult to locate the graves of fallen soldiers. Searching and verifying information is also challenging because the surviving witnesses—comrades and local people—are either elderly or deceased.
The search and collection of the remains of fallen soldiers is carried out carefully according to procedures, and information must be verified multiple times to ensure accuracy.
Officers, staff, and soldiers regularly exchange information, stay informed of the situation, and promptly learn from experience after each operation to direct the search and collection of martyrs' remains more effectively.
In addition, emphasis should be placed on promoting and educating people, especially the younger generation, about patriotism, national pride, and profound gratitude towards the heroic martyrs.
The identification and handover of the remains of fallen heroes to their families is an act of gratitude and repayment for the immense contributions made by these heroes and their families in protecting and preserving our sacred homeland.
