According to Dr. Do Huy Binh, a specialist in Aesthetic Dermatology at Dong Nai Dermatology Hospital: Sunlight is one of the most important exogenous factors affecting skin health. UVA and UVB rays are the main culprits causing much damage.
"Ultraviolet rays can damage skin cell DNA, create free radicals, accelerate aging, cause pigmentation disorders, and increase the risk of skin cancer. The hospital frequently receives many cases such as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, premature skin aging, or adverse effects from cosmetic procedures due to patients not properly protecting their skin from sunlight," shared Dr. Binh.
According to Dr. Binh, protecting the skin from sunlight should be considered the foundation of any skin care and treatment strategy. Even with the use of modern skincare ingredients or advanced cosmetic technologies, treatment results may not be as expected if patients neglect sun protection.
Experts recommend that effective sun protection requires a combination of measures. First, limit direct exposure to sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm – the time when UV intensity is highest. When going outside, people should wear long-sleeved shirts, face masks, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats for increased physical protection.
In addition, it's important to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an appropriate SPF, usually 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be applied 15-20 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied every 2 hours, especially after sweating heavily or being exposed to water.
Dr. Do Huy Binh also noted that skincare and sun protection need to be individualized for each group of people, such as those with melasma, patients after laser treatments or chemical peels, and those with photosensitive skin conditions or autoimmune diseases. Following the doctor's instructions correctly will help improve treatment effectiveness and reduce the risk of recurrence.
"Healthy and beautiful skin doesn't come from quick fixes, but starts with simple, daily protective habits. Sun protection isn't a temporary choice; it should become part of a healthy lifestyle," Dr. Binh emphasized.
