Football (soccer) is one of the Olympic sports that has been very successful at the 33rd SEA Games.

Including the 5 gold medals in the demonstration events, the Vietnamese sports delegation has won a total of 91 gold medals, achieving the target of 90 gold medals set before departure.

It is noteworthy that at the 33rd SEA Games, despite ranking only 6th in the number of participating athletes, even less than half that of host country Thailand, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation still achieved an excellent finish, ranking 3rd overall.

Including athletes who traveled with social funding, the entire Vietnamese delegation consisted of only 841 athletes, while host country Thailand had 1,530 athletes; Indonesia 1,020 athletes; the Philippines 1,157 athletes; Malaysia 1,192 athletes; and Singapore 976 athletes.

Thus, compared to the Thai delegation, Vietnam has 689 fewer athletes; 179 fewer athletes than the Indonesian delegation; 351 fewer athletes than the Malaysian delegation, currently ranked 4th; and 135 fewer athletes than Singapore, ranked 6th.

Despite being significantly limited in numbers and facing the absence of many of their strongest sports and events from the competition program, the Vietnamese sports delegation still excelled, securing a place in the top 3 of the Games. These impressive figures further demonstrate the effort, determination, and effectiveness of the Vietnamese athletes.

Canoeing athletes won both gold medals at the Games, ranking first overall.

Notably, this SEA Games also showcased the success of Olympic sports. To date, Olympic sports have won 59 gold medals, accounting for nearly 70% of the total.

If we include the 7 gold medals from the two key sports preparing for the Asian Games, namely karate and sepak takraw, then the key sports for the Olympic and Asian Games have won a total of 66 gold medals, accounting for 76.7% of the total gold medals won by the Vietnamese sports delegation.

The results at the 33rd SEA Games once again affirmed the resilience, willpower, and endurance of Vietnamese sports, despite having a significantly smaller contingent compared to many other sports delegations in the region. Ranking only 6th in terms of the number of athletes but still achieving 3rd place overall is not just a purely medal achievement, but also a testament to the effective investment, training organization, and sound development direction of the sports sector.

Notably, the major contributions from Olympic sports and key disciplines geared towards the Asian Games demonstrate that the strategy of focusing on quality, depth, and sustainability is paying off. The medals won not only reflect the professional capabilities of athletes and coaches, but also demonstrate their ability to adapt and overcome difficulties in less than ideal competition conditions.

The 33rd SEA Games therefore not only concluded with a top-ranking position in the region, but also opened up confidence in the long-term development path of Vietnamese sports: steadfastly pursuing Olympic goals, aiming for the Asian Games, and gradually asserting its position on the continental stage.
