E-commerce is in turmoil. TikTok's push to expand its e-commerce operations in Southeast Asia is facing new obstacles. Indonesia was the first country to ban e-commerce transactions via social media platforms since the end of September 2023 to protect its micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. TikTok was forced to comply with the new regulations on October 4th, ceasing sales on its TikTok Shop platform.
Other countries in the region have begun taking steps to strengthen control over TikTok's operations, notably Vietnam and Malaysia. In the near future, it is possible that more countries will introduce similar policies to increase control over TikTok's activities in Southeast Asia.
New breakthroughs in quantum supercomputer development. Scientists from Hefei (the capital of Anhui province, China) have made new progress in building a prototype of the Jiuzhang 3.0 quantum computer. This supercomputer is estimated to be capable of solving various complex calculations 10 million times faster than Frontier – currently the world's most powerful supercomputer. Scientists estimate that the Jiuzhang 3.0 computer will only need 1.27 microseconds to solve calculations that Frontier might take approximately 600 years to complete.
Testing of a hydrogen-fueled vessel. China's first hydrogen-fueled vessel, the Three Gorges 1, has completed its maiden voyage in Yichang, Hubei Province. This event marks a breakthrough in the application of hydrogen-fueled engine technology on ships. It is estimated that each new vessel will save 103 tons of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 343 tons per year. When fully fueled, the vessel can travel 200 km. The Three Gorges 1 will be used for transportation, inspection, and emergency operations in the Three Gorges area.
Artificial intelligence and drones have been successfully applied in rescue operations. For a week, Hong Kong (China) rescue forces searched an area of over 10 square kilometers for a missing teenager. The operation was complicated by the impact of Typhoon Koinu, and the victim did not possess any electronic devices that could be used for location tracking. Rescue teams relied on drones, taking over 10,000 photos of the area and using AI to analyze the data and pinpoint the victim's location. The data was used to map possible routes the victim might have taken. Thanks to this, the victim was found after seven days of searching and is currently receiving emergency medical treatment at a hospital.
