In a statement issued on May 22, the EU Council said the amendment was based on the bloc's existing restrictions on Iran.
Under the updated framework, the EU can impose sanctions on individuals and entities involved in or supporting Iranian actions and policies if they are deemed by the EU to threaten maritime security in the region.
The measures include travel bans, asset freezes, and prohibitions on EU citizens and businesses providing money, financial assets, or economic resources to those subject to sanctions.
Iran has not yet responded to the EU Council's decision.

In other developments on the same day, the agency announced a one-year temporary suspension of tariffs on key nitrogen-containing fertilizers, such as urea and ammonia.
The decision aims to minimize the impact of the crisis in the Middle East on the European Union's agricultural sector.
According to the Council's statement, the measure is expected to save EU farmers and the fertilizer industry around 60 million euros in import taxes.
The temporary suspension of tariffs does not apply to fertilizer products imported from Russia or Belarus, and will take effect after official announcement.
Currently, the EU imports large quantities of fertilizers duty-free from countries with preferential treatment. However, the bloc still has to import a significant amount of this product at tariff rates ranging from 5.5% to 6.5%.
