According to UN News, the initial detection effort was delayed because on-site testing in Bunia focused on the more common Zaire strain, missing the Bundibugyo strain for weeks.
In response to this situation, authorities in eastern Congo have intensified health checks at quarantine checkpoints around the city of Bunia, focusing on people arriving from the mining town of Mongbwalu, which has been identified as the epicenter of the outbreak.
A health expert at the Mudjipala station said: "We are very concerned about people coming from Mongbwalu. At first, people didn't believe there was an epidemic. That's what caused the disease to spread all the way to Bunia. Therefore, we are implementing the strictest disease control measures for people coming from Mongbwalu."

The WHO warns that insecurity, constant population movement, and a lack of specific vaccines are major obstacles in efforts to control the pandemic.
