EURO 2024 and Eriksen's heart

VietNamNetVietNamNet17/06/2024

1. More than just a goal. Spectators at Stuttgart Arena and those watching live on television experienced a special emotion as Christian Eriksen scored against Slovenia.

Eriksen scored the opening goal in the match between Denmark and Slovenia in Group C of EURO 2024 .

Eriksen scored 1,100 days after suffering a heart attack.

He celebrated spontaneously and with boundless energy. For Eriksen, it was a sacred moment that he felt he had experienced both from life and from the ball.

His teammates surrounded him, embracing and congratulating Eriksen. It was the 32-year-old midfielder's first goal in his EURO career.

Eriksen views football with an insight that others can hardly imagine. He has always understood that the past does not determine the future.

That adage was perfectly illustrated by the outstanding performance of Denmark's number 10 in Stuttgart . Although Slovenia salvaged a point from Denmark, Eriksen's story at the EURO had a happy ending.

2. The last time Eriksen played in a EURO match, against Finland in 2021, his heart suddenly stopped beating. The heart attack caused him to collapse to the ground, and his life was in danger.

Upon recovery, a worrying medical diagnosis emerged, as he was unlikely to be able to wear shoes again. He was unable to play in Serie A with Inter (where he was still under contract) because Italian regulations prohibited playing with an integrated defibrillator.

But eight months later, Eriksen had already achieved that in English football. First at Brentford, then at Manchester United.

Of course, that applies to the Danish national team as well. Because no one has the talent of Eriksen, a player with a compass that can accurately guide every pass. He moves between the lines without being easily anticipated.

Eriksen demonstrated those qualities in the match against Slovenia. He moved from the back line, penetrated the penalty area, controlled the ball, and unleashed a quick shot, resulting in a goal.

This is Eriksen's football, his own battle, 1,100 days after his heart attack. "Speechless," UEFA sent a message with an image of Christian celebrating his goal.

3. Slovenia, in their return to the EURO since 2000, are striving for their first victory in the history of the European Football Championship.

They did it using a simple formula: the giant Jan Oblak with his long arms in goal, and the energy and youth of Benjamin Sesko in attack.

Denmark drew, but Eriksen won.

With the midfield outplayed by Eriksen, Oblak stood out with three saves. Sesko was energetic and had a shot that hit the post.

Ultimately, Slovenia were somewhat fortunate to equalize thanks to a long-range shot from Erik Janza. The shot deflected off a Danish player and flew into the net.

Denmark were somewhat disappointed to drop points. But Eriksen – or Golazo , the nickname Pochettino gave him at Tottenham for his ability to surprise with goals – was the winner.

Eriksen was nurtured by Bergkamp in Ajax's youth team and was endorsed by Johan Cruyff. At Inter, he received unwavering support from Antonio Conte. He has just shown that he has a heart for football.
