According to Khaosod newspaper (Thailand), Mr. Nadir Altaf, 52 years old, German nationality, filed a complaint at Pattaya Police Station on the evening of November 12, after being tricked into buying 5 bottles of herbal coconut oil for 4,000 euros (4,600 USD), instead of 4,000 baht (125 USD) as he thought.
According to his statement to the police, while walking around Pattaya, Mr. Nadir was approached by a foreign man, suspected of being of Middle Eastern origin, who offered him herbal coconut oil products with the advertisement "miraculous hair growth stimulant".
Finding the product attractive, Mr. Nadir followed the seller to a nearby store and agreed to buy 5 bottles.
The seller then listed the price as "4,000" but did not specify the currency, leading Mr. Nadir to think it was 4,000 baht and proceed to pay.
However, when swiping his credit card, the amount deducted was up to 4,000 euros, equivalent to about 140,000 baht. Realizing he had been cheated, Mr. Nadir Altaf immediately reported it to the police.
Senior Lieutenant Phupha Hongyakul, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at Pattaya Police Station, said he had recorded the incident and was coordinating with investigators to verify it.
He stressed that scams of this type occur quite frequently in the area, but many victims do not report them. When complaints are filed, police often monitor the store to ensure the victim's rights and refunds.
