"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" grossed just under $60 million worldwide in five days.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film topped the North American box office charts last weekend (May 24-26) with $25.5 million from 3,804 theaters. However, this achievement is difficult to compare to the film Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) when the film earned $45 million in three days.
Not only did North American audiences rarely see Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the film was also poorly received at the international box office. The film earned $33.3 million from 75 countries and territories, with a total global revenue of $58.9 million. At the Vietnamese box office, the film only earned more than VND7.2 billion after five days of release, according to Box Office Vietnam.
David A. Gross, CEO of film consultancy Franchise Entertainment Research, said the film had a difficult opening despite being highly praised by critics. The film cost $168 million to produce, not including marketing costs and bringing the film to the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Variety points out that the project's poor earnings are often due to the absence of stars from the first installment. For example, the $337 million revenue of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) did not compare to The Hunger Games (2012) - which reached nearly $700 million, due to the absence of Jennifer Lawrence (as Katniss Everdeen).
In the case of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the film does not feature Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, two artists who made the first part successful. In addition, the prequel's ending is the beginning of the original film, leading to the general audience's lack of interest in the work.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), revolving around the young life of female warrior Furiosa (played by Anya Taylor-Joy). In the 2015 film, this role was played by star Charlize Theron. The work tells the story of Furiosa being kidnapped from the "Green Zone of Mothers" by a group of bandits - led by Warlord Dementus (Hemsworth) - and having to fight to survive. After many dangers, Furiosa plans to travel through the Wasteland to find her way home.
The Mad Max franchise was created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy. Miller conceived the original idea while working as a doctor in Sydney, frequently treating people in car accidents. The surgeries reminded him of his friends who died racing in his hometown as a teenager. The film is set in a future world where people have gone mad and killed each other due to a shortage of oil. After his wife and child are murdered by a gang of thugs, police officer Max goes mad and seeks revenge on the thugs.
After its release in 1979, Mad Max was highly appreciated by the public and experts, turning Mel Gibson into a world star. According to Numbers, the series earned 530 million USD worldwide. At the 2016 Oscars, Mad Max: Fury Road won six out of 10 nominations, including the categories of Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Outstanding Sound Editing.
Variety writer Rebecca Rubin commented that the 2015 film was hailed as one of the best action movies, but it was not exactly a box office hit. The film opened to $45 million and grossed a modest $380 million, compared to its large budget of $180 million, and did not rank among the 20 highest-grossing films of the year.
