According to the WMO report, Europe experienced many unusual heat waves in the 3 months of summer 2022. The most unusual heat wave occurred around mid-July 2022.
The extreme heat caused at least 15,700 deaths from the heatwave. Of these, around 4,500 died in Spain, 4,500 in Germany, 2,800 in the UK, 2,800 in France and 1,000 in Portugal.
Greenhouse gas emissions will continue to increase in 2022, leading to extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and heat waves affecting all continents, the WMO said.
The average global temperature over the past eight years has been unusually high. In 2022, temperatures were 1.15 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 average.
"As greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise and the climate changes, people around the world continue to be negatively affected by extreme weather and climate events," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
For example, in 2022, drought continued to occur in East Africa, Pakistan recorded record rainfall, and China and Europe suffered unprecedented heat waves.
