Trouble arises from incorrect weight loss methods | Women

One of the weight-loss trends circulating on social media is the low-carb diet, which limits carbohydrate intake and increases the proportion of protein and fat in the diet. According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lam – former Deputy Director of the National Institute of Nutrition, carbohydrates are starches, and for Vietnamese people, this is the main source of energy in their daily diet (such as rice, noodles, corn, potatoes, cassava, etc.).

"If you cut down on carbohydrates, the total energy intake will decrease, but the mistake here is that we often completely eliminate carbohydrates. Instead, we eat more protein and fat, while protein from meat is high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Maintaining this diet for a long time can easily lead to high blood lipid levels and cardiovascular events."

Furthermore, consuming excessive amounts of protein leads to high uric acid levels in the blood, easily causing gout and joint pain... Not to mention, eating too much protein puts extra strain on the kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure. Some cancers also increase in people who eat too much meat, while eating too few fruits and vegetables worsens constipation…” – a nutritionist explained.

Therefore, if you follow a low-carb diet, you can stick to it for 1-2 weeks, but after that, you still need to switch back to a balanced diet. Don't wait until your body experiences metabolic disorders, leading to kidney and cardiovascular problems, because at that point, it will be very difficult to fully recover.

In another case, many people think that skipping breakfast will help them lose weight, but according to Associate Professor Lam, this is an alarming bad habit. Young people who gain a lot of weight often skip meals to lose weight, but losing weight through improper diets will only reduce muscle mass while fat mass remains unchanged. Not to mention, the "feast and famine" pattern of eating little during the day but consuming a lot at night leads to even more fat accumulation. And once overweight or obese, it will lead to a range of other chronic diseases…

Professor Dr. Le Thi Huong - Director of the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Training; Head of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety (Hanoi Medical University) warns that losing weight using unscientific methods is a regrettable mistake. In reality, there have been cases of weight loss using sugarcane juice and bell peppers for detox, leading to insufficient energy intake for daily activities and electrolyte imbalance. It is estimated that women need 1000-1200 calories/day; men need 1300-1500 calories/day. A tragic case we know of is that of a student who died due to fasting to lose weight.

Therefore, the advice for everyone wanting to adopt any weight loss regimen is to seek advice from a nutritionist to create a low-calorie diet while still ensuring nutritional balance.

Woman suffers consequences after drinking 2.5 liters of water daily for detoxification.

To cleanse her body, the woman drank 2.5 liters of water every day, along with eating juicy fruits and drinking broth; unknowingly, this put her life in danger.

Drinking water is beneficial for the body, but people still need to determine the appropriate amount based on their physical condition; overconsumption can be dangerous. A recent story shared by Dr. Yuan Yu-Ting (Taiwan, China) about a case of severe heart failure caused by excessive water intake has attracted significant public attention.

On "The Hottest Doctor"—a popular health program—Dr. Yuan Yu Ting recounted a recent visit to a 60-year-old female patient with a history of diabetes and heart disease, who had been taking medication for a long time. Fearing that the large amount of medication would be toxic to her body, and having heard that drinking plenty of water daily would help cleanse and detoxify, the patient decided to follow the advice.

Every day, this woman drank 2.5 liters of water and ate a lot of juicy fruits and broth. After maintaining this diet for two weeks, she began experiencing wheezing, shortness of breath, and was unable to lie down to sleep, so her family took her to the doctor. Tests and X-rays revealed that her entire lungs had turned white. She also suffered from severe heart failure.

With treatment, her condition improved, and the female patient was discharged after a few days of observation.

According to Dr. Vien Vu Dinh, drinking water to cleanse the body is good and helps boost metabolism. However, this is not suitable for some people, such as those with heart failure and kidney disease. People with heart failure cannot eliminate water normally because their hearts are not working hard enough to push water out. People with kidney disease also cannot eliminate water easily due to impaired kidney function. Therefore, they should only drink water in moderation.
