In the first month of 2026, Vietnam's pangasius exports reached over $177 million, starting the new year with positive signs. Recovering demand from China, ASEAN, and Japan helped pangasius become the fastest-growing product in the seafood sector.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (VASEP), along with the booming export trend, the price of pangasius in key farming areas such as Dong Thap, An Giang , and Can Tho City is currently around 35,000 VND/kg, 5,000-7,000 VND/kg higher than before. However, the main reason for this price increase is the shortage of supply due to many households reducing their stocking. Although demand from the US, China, Europe, and the Middle East is predicted to recover, experts warn of the risk of uncontrolled expansion if farming is done haphazardly based on price signals. The industry's direction should shift from focusing on increasing production volume to enhancing value, emphasizing the quality of breeding stock, standardizing farming areas, ensuring traceability, and controlling emissions. This will help Vietnamese pangasius consolidate its position in high-end markets and maintain sustainable growth.

Experts believe that the peak price of pangasius is a positive sign, reflecting the market's recovery. However, this is also a sensitive period if production develops spontaneously based on a "price-driven" mentality. Lessons from previous cycles show that rapid growth often leads to oversupply, plummeting prices, and disruptions in the supply chain. Therefore, controlling production according to plan, proactively securing high-quality breeding stock, and strengthening the supply chain from farming to processing to export are considered the "key" to maintaining sustainable growth in the pangasius industry and avoiding a repeat of the "rapid increase, sharp decline" cycle that has occurred many times before.
