Recently, the retail price of many types of granulated sugar on the market has decreased by 2,000-4,000 VND/kg compared to previous months.
At markets, the retail price of granulated sugar (both fine and coarse grains) ranges from 20,000 to 24,000 VND/kg. Brand-name packaged sugars are sold at 24,800-35,500 VND per 1kg package; some organic and diet sugars cost 85,000-145,000 VND per package.
Ms. Le Hong Ngoc, a grocery store owner at Vinh Long City Market (Point 2, Ward 4), said: “Sugar prices have decreased slightly compared to the beginning of the year, but customers still prefer to buy sugar in retail quantities of 0.5kg or more. I only import a few dozen kilograms of each type because demand isn't strong, and I'm afraid the sugar will get damp if stored for too long, making it difficult to sell.”
Meanwhile, organic sugar and diet sugar, which mainly serve a niche customer segment, remain expensive. Many business owners hope that sugar prices will stabilize when food production demand increases again.
