Jackfruit production has dropped sharply compared to the peak season, while demand for export has increased significantly, leading to a sharp rise in prices. The high prices have boosted farmers' incomes, giving them hope for a prosperous Lunar New Year after a long period of fluctuating agricultural prices.
Currently, in An Giang province, the price of Thai jackfruit is being purchased by traders at 30,000 – 32,000 VND/kg, double the price from about three months ago. Previously, the price of Thai jackfruit was only 15,000 – 16,000 VND/kg, and at times even lower due to abundant supply. Now, red-fleshed jackfruit, due to limited supply, is being purchased by traders at 43,000 – 45,000 VND/kg, double the price compared to the same period three months ago. This is considered a relatively high and stable price amidst the erratic fluctuations of many agricultural products.
Vinh Te border ward in An Giang province has approximately 300 hectares of Thai jackfruit and red-fleshed jackfruit trees. This is one of the province's largest concentrated jackfruit growing areas. Many local farmers say that, with current prices, jackfruit growers can achieve considerable profits if they manage their investment costs well.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, residing in Vinh Phu hamlet, Vinh Te ward, stated: Currently, Thai jackfruit is bearing fruit out of season, so the yield is not high, and traders buy up all the harvested jackfruit as soon as it's picked. The price of Thai jackfruit has doubled compared to the end of September 2025. After deducting expenses, farmers are making a profit of over 10,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Dung, on average, each hectare of jackfruit can yield from several tens to hundreds of tons per year, depending on the variety, age of the tree, and cultivation techniques. With the current jackfruit prices, jackfruit growers are making high profits. Red-fleshed jackfruit, in particular, has higher initial investment costs, but its stable selling price and favorable market demand help farmers increase their income.

Currently, most jackfruit orchards in An Giang province bear fruit during the main season, while the number of households investing in off-season flowering treatments remains limited. In addition, the unpredictable weather in recent months, with erratic rain and sunshine, has affected fruit setting and yield, leading to a decrease in market supply.
According to traders, jackfruit prices have risen sharply in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) because importing markets for Vietnamese jackfruit, such as China, are entering the cold season, preventing jackfruit trees from bearing fruit, while Vietnam's mild climate allows jackfruit trees to bear fruit year-round.
Mr. Doan Hung Cuong, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Vinh Te Ward, An Giang Province, said: "In Vinh Te Ward, there are two designated jackfruit growing areas covering over 10 hectares for export to China. Approximately 90% of the local jackfruit production is purchased by traders for export to China and Cambodia. Currently, the jackfruit growing area in Vinh Te Ward is basically saturated. The ward has been promoting and encouraging people not to abandon rice cultivation to plant jackfruit on a massive scale, to avoid disrupting the planning."
According to Mr. Cuong, the local authorities are also strengthening propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage farmers to switch to crops and livestock in accordance with the approved plan. For cases where farmers arbitrarily convert rice fields to jackfruit cultivation, contrary to the plan, the Economic , Infrastructure and Urban Planning Department of Vinh Te Ward will conduct inspections, draw up reports, and request that the people restore the land to its original state.
Given the rising price of jackfruit, many farmers in the province intend to expand their planting area. However, the An Giang Department of Agriculture advises against indiscriminate expansion, as the price increase is only temporary due to market shortages. Developing planting areas should be linked to planning, applying safe farming techniques, improving fruit quality, and meeting market demands. At the same time, farmers need to strengthen links with cooperatives and purchasing businesses to stabilize output and mitigate risks when jackfruit prices fluctuate.
