People are choosing to buy green vegetables at Nam Son Market (Nam Son Ward). |
According to some small traders, the main reason for the sharp increase in vegetable prices is the impact of prolonged heavy rains, which flooded vegetable-growing areas in the province and other localities in the North, damaging vegetables and significantly reducing supply. In addition, there are difficulties in harvesting and transportation; at supermarkets, leafy vegetables have to be transported from Moc Chau, Sa Pa, and Da Lat to meet supply. Furthermore, the increased demand during the National Day holiday on September 2nd and the Mid-Autumn Festival also contributed to the rise in green vegetable prices…
Rising vegetable prices have forced many households to change their menus. Instead of buying fresh vegetables every day, many people are choosing long-lasting vegetables like squash, chayote, and carrots, or even growing their own vegetables to be somewhat self-sufficient. Ms. Le Thi Huong (Nam Son ward), who was choosing vegetables, said: "The sharp increase in vegetable prices has significantly raised living expenses. There are some vegetables that we used to eat regularly, but now we have to think carefully before buying them."
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture , the current high prices of vegetables and tubers due to supply shortages are only temporary. Therefore, farmers are advised to be cautious in production and avoid expanding planting areas indiscriminately, as this could easily lead to a "bumper harvest, low prices" situation when supply becomes abundant again. Simultaneously, they should research the market, select suitable crop varieties for cultivation, and strengthen production linkages to ensure product outlets.
