On January 23, the US dollar price on the free market surged and exceeded 25,000 VND for the first time since October 2022.
Foreign exchange trading points in the market sharply increased the buying and selling price of USD by nearly 200 dong compared to the end of the week, to 24,980 - 25,080 dong per USD.
Compared to the beginning of the month, the black market exchange rate for each USD has increased by 260 VND for buying and 300 VND for selling, equivalent to a 1-1.2% increase. However, compared to the record high set in October 2022, the current black market USD price is still about 250 VND lower per USD.
Shop owners explained that the increase in USD prices was due to higher demand. The owner of a large gold shop on Le Loi Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, said that in the past few days, information circulating in the market about businesses nearing their foreign currency loan repayment deadlines has led many people to rush to buy USD for fear of a shortage.
The free market USD exchange rate has risen sharply recently, creating a significant gap compared to the bank rate. This morning, the central exchange rate was listed by the State Bank of Vietnam at 24,031 VND/USD, a decrease of 6 VND. With the current 5% margin, the USD price at commercial banks is allowed to fluctuate between 22,829 VND and 25,232 VND. The USD price at banks has been adjusted downwards by 15-40 VND in each direction.
Major banks listed the buying and selling exchange rates at 24,335 - 24,705 VND/USD (buy - sell), an increase of 5 VND in each direction compared to before. At joint-stock banks, the price was 24,405-24,710 VND/USD.
