According to Mr. Dinh Cong Anh (currently residing in Ho Chi Minh City), after many years of working away from home, he planned to return to his hometown in Thanh Hoa this year. However, when searching for Tet holiday flight tickets to go home, he was "shocked" to find that many flights were already sold out, and other classes of seats were "available but in limited quantities and at very high prices, around 10 million VND."

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Thanh Hoa are fully booked from the 24th to the 28th of the 12th lunar month.
In fact, for almost a month now, many workers in Ho Chi Minh City have been eagerly awaiting news from airlines about increasing capacity and adding flights for the Lunar New Year holiday so they can have a chance to return home. Airfares have been sky-high since they first went on sale, and as the holiday approaches, the number of available seats decreases, with many routes even becoming fully booked.
A survey conducted by reporters on flights from South to North revealed that many flights on peak days such as the 24th, 25th, and 26th of the 12th lunar month were sold out, or only had premium economy, business class, or Skyboss tickets available. Vietnam Airlines ' premium economy tickets cost up to 5.3 million VND/one-way, while business class tickets were nearly 10 million VND on flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
During off-peak days, ticket prices are lower, around 3.7 million VND per one-way trip. Including a round trip, the cost per passenger for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route is approximately 7-8 million VND.

Many airlines' flights on the 27th day of the Lunar New Year only have business class tickets left, at very high prices.
Similarly, flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Central Vietnam are also sold out in the days leading up to Tet. Many Vietnam Airlines flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh are fully booked, forcing passengers to fly via Da Nang or Noi Bai and then connect to Vinh, with ticket prices ranging from 5 to 6 million VND per trip. Vietjet Air is also sold out for the Ho Chi Minh City - Vinh route from the 24th to the 28th of the 12th lunar month and the return flight from the 4th to the 8th of Tet. For other days, round-trip tickets cost over 7 million VND.
In addition, routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Thanh Hoa, Dong Hoi, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Buon Ma Thuot... also recorded a shortage of tickets or very high ticket prices in the days leading up to Tet. Tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang ranged from 3.2 to 3.6 million VND/one way, Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang tickets ranged from 2 to 3 million VND, and Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot tickets were around 3 million VND/one way, with only a few seats available during off-peak hours.
According to airlines, the main reason for the high ticket prices stems from a skewed demand. Before Tet (Lunar New Year), the flow of passengers from the South to the North increased sharply, while after Tet, the number of passengers returning to Ho Chi Minh City surged, often forcing airlines to fly empty on one leg. Operating costs remain almost unchanged for both directions, so ticket prices during peak periods must increase to compensate for those during off-peak periods.
Furthermore, passenger travel demand is concentrated in the 7 days before and after Tet (Lunar New Year). This causes flights with convenient times and dates to quickly fill up, driving ticket prices to their peak, even though the total number of flights per day continues to increase.

For the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, airlines have offered an unprecedented number of seats. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, from the 15th day of the 12th lunar month to the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, domestic airlines are expected to operate more than 36,900 flights, a 27% increase compared to the same period of the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025 and a 22% increase compared to the normal flight schedule.
Of these, domestic flights are expected to reach 27,200, a 31% increase compared to the same period last year and a 32% increase compared to the normal flight schedule. The total number of seats expected to be offered across the entire flight network during Tet is 7.8 million, a 28% increase compared to Tet last year and a 21% increase compared to the normal flight schedule. Of these, domestic flights account for more than 5.6 million seats, and international flights are expected to reach nearly 2.2 million seats.
