Oil prices were virtually unchanged on Monday, supported by positive economic news from China but pressured by the potential negative impact of US tariffs as traders remained concerned about the Russia-Ukraine trade war.
Brent crude futures fell 10 cents, or 0.1%, to $72.71 a barrel at 11:49 a.m. Eastern Time (1649 GMT). US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 20 cents, or 0.3%, to $69.56.
In other U.S. energy markets, the start of the April contract, marking the first month since the cut, saw U.S. diesel futures prices fall to a nine-week low at the end of the winter heating season. Gasoline futures prices surged to a six-month high ahead of the summer driving season.
On Sunday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the tariffs on Canada and Mexico would take effect on Tuesday, but President Donald Trump would decide whether to maintain the 25% tariff as planned.
"Tariffs can slow economic growth and oil demand, but they also restrict oil supply by targeting oil producers like Canada and Mexico," said Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM.
Canada's oil services and drilling industries are showing signs of slowing down amid the threat of tariffs. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that regardless of Washington's decision, her country remains ready.
China, the second-largest economy after the United States, said it is preparing countermeasures against tariffs targeting the US agricultural sector.
In early trading, crude oil prices were supported by data showing manufacturing activity in February grew at its fastest pace in three months. However, recent reports of declining US consumer demand have raised concerns about a recession.
Analysts say Trump's tariff plan also raises concerns about inflation at the Federal Reserve. This could lead the Fed to keep interest rates high for longer, which could slow economic growth and energy demand.
Concerns about the impact of potentially slowing economic growth on oil demand have put pressure on WTI prices, which have fallen by about 10% over the past six weeks.
According to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Commitment of Traders report, this prompted speculators to cut their net long positions in futures and options on the Intercontinental and New York Commodity Exchanges last week to their lowest level since a record low of 30,623 contracts in December 2023.
