Intense fighting 'on all front lines'

Reuters reported on August 14th that Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said intense fighting was taking place along the entire front line and Kyiv had achieved "some success" in pushing back Russian forces in the southeastern part of the country.

She acknowledged that progress was hampered by extensive minefields and a strong Russian hold on the ground. However, Ukrainian troops advanced around the village of Staromaiorske, about 95 km from the Russian-controlled Donetsk region, and exerted pressure on two southern front areas.

A shopping center in Odessa, southern Ukraine, caught fire after an attack. The images are from a video released on August 14th.

Earlier that day, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov stated that Ukraine had become "the most mine-ridden country in the world ," and called on allies to step up efforts to assist in mine clearance.

"The minefields stretch for hundreds of kilometers, containing millions of explosive devices; in some frontline areas, there are as many as five mines per square meter," The Guardian quoted him as saying.

Landmines planted in Russian-controlled areas have slowed Ukraine's counteroffensive, limiting efforts to regain control of territories in the east and south.

At a Ramstein conference in Germany on July 15, Lithuania announced plans to form a mine-clearing alliance for Ukraine. The alliance will help strengthen aid in the form of training and mine-clearing equipment.

Landmines were collected in Kherson.

Reznikov described this as "an important step," but stressed the importance of urgent support. "Expanding and accelerating the training of combat engineers is also absolutely essential and must be done quickly and systematically. Combat engineers are urgently needed here right now," said the Ukrainian Defense Minister.

Pete Smith, Ukraine program manager at the Scottish NGO Halo, claims that the density of landmines in Ukraine is "unprecedented in modern history." Russia has not commented on these reports.

Ukraine continues to counter UAVs.

According to The Kyiv Independent on August 14, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched several attacks overnight using suicide drones and cruise missiles.

Accordingly, Russia used a total of 15 Shahed-136/131 UAVs and 8 Kalibr missiles, all of which were shot down.

The UAVs were launched from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, a town on the Azov Sea coast in Russia's Krasnodar Krai region, while the missiles were launched from a ship based near Yalta in Crimea.

Debris from missiles and UAVs fell in Odessa, causing fires in several locations across the city and injuring three supermarket employees.

Also on August 14, Ukrainian soldiers shot down a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter near Bakhmut.

Ukraine suffered double casualties after launching its counterattack.

Meanwhile, TASS reported that Russian forces attacked units of the 63rd and 67th Mechanized Brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the direction of Krasny Liman, inflicting more than 60 casualties on the enemy.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has commented on the other's claims. Reuters reported on August 14th that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that Russian weapons are proving effective in Ukraine, while Western weapons are "far from perfect."

Regarding the incident in which a Russian warship fired warning shots at a cargo ship in the Black Sea, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on August 14th "strongly condemned the provocative act."

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that on August 13, a Russian warship fired its automatic weapons to warn a Palau-flagged cargo ship in the southwestern Black Sea as it headed towards Ukraine, according to TASS.

Specifically, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the patrol vessel Vasily Bykov fired warning shots after the captain of the Sukru Okan vessel failed to comply with orders to stop for inspection.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that the Sukru Okan vessel is en route to the Ukrainian port of Izmail. Data from the Refinitiv company indicates the ship is heading north towards the Bulgarian coast.
