Raising awareness to prevent mine accidents and support mine victims

(GLO)- On December 4, the Vietnam National Mine Action Center coordinated with the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command to organize a conference to deploy and organize communication activities to prevent accidents caused by mines and post-war explosives in the province.

VNMAC was established by the Government in March 2014 and assigned to the Ministry of National Defense for management. The unit has the function and task of being the national coordinating agency for activities to overcome the consequences of bombs, mines and explosives according to the National Action Program to overcome the consequences of post-war bombs and mines for the period 2010-2025 approved by the Prime Minister on April 21, 2010 (Program 504).

Over the years, VNMAC has always closely coordinated with functional agencies of central and local ministries, departments and branches to effectively implement key activities such as: drafting legal documents; mobilizing funding resources; investigating and surveying mine and explosive clearance; managing data and information; training to improve capacity; supporting victims and educating about mine accident prevention.

In Gia Lai province, the Provincial People's Committee has proactively coordinated with units of the Ministry of National Defense and Military Region 5 to conduct investigations, surveys, and map out bomb and mine contamination.

The total area of ​​land contaminated with mines and bombs in the province by 2025 is more than 244,206 hectares, accounting for 11.3% of the province's natural area. Up to now, the province has cleared more than 5,350 hectares of mines and bombs, accounting for 2.2% of the total contaminated land area; safely handled 19,292 mines and bombs of all kinds.

In addition, departments, branches and localities in the province also actively carry out information, communication and education work on mine accident prevention as well as activities to support mine victims.

At the conference, agencies and units discussed a coordination plan to effectively implement communication and education activities to raise awareness of mine and explosive accident prevention and support post-war mine and bomb victims in difficult circumstances in Gia Lai province.

Speaking at the conference, Colonel Mai Kim Binh - Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command affirmed that activities related to overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines are very important; contributing to strengthening management capacity in overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines after the war, ensuring safety for people, creating favorable conditions for local socio-economic development.

At the same time, the province's viewpoint is to mobilize all resources to clear mines and explosives and support people, especially people with disabilities and mine victims.

On that basis, the Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command requested VNMAC to have a detailed and specific implementation coordination plan and closely coordinate with the Provincial Military Command and relevant agencies during the implementation process. Especially providing documents, means and other guarantees and funding for implementation.

As the national coordinating agency in overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines, on behalf of VNMAC, Colonel Nghiem Xuan Lam highly appreciated and thanked the initiative and responsibility of all levels and sectors of Gia Lai province in coordinating the implementation of this activity.

Colonel Nghiem Xuan Lam also expressed his belief that with a high sense of responsibility and close coordination between VNMAC and the sectors of Gia Lai province, activities in the coming time will be effectively implemented; gradually eliminating the risk of accidents with bombs, mines and explosives, towards a safe living environment and sustainable development for the people.
