The super-rich seek to rejuvenate their biological age

Real estate entrepreneur Peter Fioretti, 58, has long wanted to live a long, healthy life. He is aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and always reads books about longevity to gain more knowledge.

Five years ago, during a routine check-up, Fioretti was told by his doctor that his heart health was equivalent to that of a person in his early 50s. Although this was a positive result, Fioretti still felt dissatisfied.

He consulted 10 doctors and made lifestyle changes. After adjusting his diet and exercise regimen, Fioretti, now 63, has a heart that is considered as healthy as a 47-year-old man.

Having successfully “reversed the biological age of the heart” by 25 years, Fioretti’s next goal is to live to 120 years old, leaving with all mental and physical functions intact. Currently, the world has only recorded one person living past 120 years old.

“I want to go hiking and cycling. I want to play with my grandchildren. Then I want to climb a high mountain with my wife,” he said of his wish for a long life.

Fioretti co-chairs a club of 25 ultra-wealthy people, founded about a year and a half ago. All members have a net worth of at least $100 million. They call themselves R360, and they share a common goal of pushing the limits of human longevity.

“The focus is on care, prevention to stay healthy, not on solving problems once they have occurred,” Fioretti said.

Like the members of R360, the world’s richest people are searching for the key to immortality, or to extending their lifespans. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has invested $180 million in biotech to find a way to delay death by 10 years. PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel has also spent millions on life extension.

In a 2017 interview, when asked why Silicon Valley tycoons are obsessed with immortality, Thiel replied: “So why are other people so indifferent to their own death?”

The R360 team regularly meets with top nutritionists and trainers. They focus on learning the science behind anti-aging.

Millionaires often visit biotech companies that develop stem cells, which are one of the most popular rejuvenation treatments, helping to repair damage caused by disease or aging. The field of research has great potential, but relatively few treatments have been approved for use in practice. According to a 2020 study, the top countries for stem cell tourism are the United States, China, India, Thailand, and Mexico.

The cost of stem cell therapy varies depending on the type of cells used and where the therapy is performed, ranging from about $5,000 to $50,000. In the United States, stem cell therapy costs between $8,000 and $12,000, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In Mexico, patients can pay between $5,000 and $20,000 for a stem cell transplant or treatment. Major hospitals in South Korea offer this service for about $6,000 to $19,000.

Some companies hype stem cells as a “miracle solution to aging.” In 2021, an Iowa clinic was caught exaggerating its services in a meeting with potential clients.

But risks are not stopping the super-rich from the race to rejuvenate their biological years. Fioretti is planning a presentation by author Dan Buettner, director of Blue Zones, a company that studies longevity Blue Zones such as Okinawa (Japan) and Sardinia (Italy).

The R360 team even has a “science ambassador” in the form of Harvard University professor David Sinclair, who is studying the effects of Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), a molecule that helps prolong the lifespan of mice, in humans.

Nicotinamide Mononucleotide is a supplement that helps increase levels of NAD+, an important coenzyme in the body. NAD+ plays an essential role in supporting metabolism and maintaining healthy cell function.

Professor Sinclair explains that the human body uses NAD+ as a “measure of aging.” As people age, NAD+ levels decrease, the body’s repair and protection enzymes are affected, and people can no longer naturally fight aging. Supplementing with NMN helps NAD+ levels rise again, thereby enhancing cognition, reducing anxiety, reducing inflammation, and increasing longevity.

The R360 team is even looking into psychedelics, with the aim of using them to treat addiction and improve mental health. However, experts are skeptical about this research.
